Well I hate to be the one to have to tell you, no it doesn't get better with surgery or weight loss. If you are lucky there will be less joint pain if you have arthritis but it doesn't really affect the fibro at all. There are some lovely ladies here that have lost alot of weight but still suffer horribly from their fibro. Many have had good luck with cymbalta instead of lyrica because the lyrica tends to cause weight gain, like we need that! If we can help with any other questions feel free to pop in!

HI all!

I wanted to introduce myself in this forum. I had my gastric sleeve on 6/6/2011.  I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in Sept. 2010.  Is fibro better after the surgery?  Right now, I take flexeril at night and it pretty much controls everything.  Tried Lyrica and that didn't work for me.

i've been on cymbalta for awhile, now. along with buspirone and lately, neurontin.  i tried savella but it made my muscles jerk uncontrollably.  the combo seems to help.  i was on lyrica but am not anymore.  i regained 100 lbs.  am working on losing it but it's slow going without being able to move a whole lot.  but that's another email.
good luck with your meds.  it definitely takes some trial and error.

hang in there, tlee.  sounds like you and i have a few of the same physical issues.  i was on lyrica, too, but am now on cymbalta and neurontin and buspirone.  the combo seems to be working well.  now i need to work on the 100 lb weight regain.
i come back to this board occasionally, too.  it's a great place for info and empathy.
good luck with the med switch.  take care of you.

Topic: RE: Lyrica: Thoughts?

For me I put 30 lbs on and ticked.  I always thought about food and wanted to constantly snack.  I would eat and then 20 minutes later thinking again about food.  I just got off Lyrica and trying another avenue to deal with the nerve damage in my leg.  I'm so upset, its hard work getting the weight off and I kept believing it's me not the Lyrica.  I find it helped a bit but the pain returned soon.  I don't know if I'm the only one but I believe any type of pain relieving meds do not last the 4 hours like usual in a normal person.  I and my doctor agree the meds go through us quicker and therefore don't last as long.

Good luck!

I have fibro and took Lyrica for only a few months. During that time I gained over 20lbs and my hair was falling out. I take codeine contin for the pain and it was really not been working too well lately. In the past month I have added Cymbalta and have already notice a tremendous difference with the pain. I find I am taking less of the codeine. Cymbalta also helps with the depression. Good luck and hope you feel a bit better real soon!

I take codeine on a regular basis to help manage the pain. In the past I tried Lyrica but had an unpleasant experience with it. It didn't help the pain at all, I gained a lot of weight and my hair was falling out. My doctor put in on Cymbalta almost a month ago and I have found it to be a huge help with the pain. I have even found that I am taking less codeine. Good luck! :)

Well I've been away from the computer a lot.  I've been concentrating on losing weight by watching TV for a 45 min program on TV and then exercising for 8 to 15 min and then off again.  Plus eating right and little...  I've lost 50 lbs since I started really trying to work at it.  It's been a hard road... and still have about 60 to go.  Been spending my nights cuddled up in bed with my heating blanket and pad.  I hope that the heating blanket has been helping you.
Will never get back to my right weight but I need to lose a lot....

There are a couple of others that are also good cymbalta that was mentioned and savella a newer one. Also try seeing a rheumatologist or pain clinic they will be able to help find  good med for you. Myself I take cymbalta plus some narcotic meds. Sometimes the fibro meds alone aren't enough. Try to find a doc that will work with you on the pain meds.

I have never taken Lyrica; my internist tells me that he has found that his patients don't respond well to it.  I have been taking 4o mg of cymbalta for several months and found great relief with it when I was having terrible pain previously.  Sleeping with pillow between my knees and under arm also helped relieve pain.  Cymbalta also helps with depression, after prozac pooped out.  Good luck!
