Prednisone and racing
Got an appointment tomorrow with my rheumatologist and am hoping to avoid the steroid treatments but I just can't function right now. My psoriatic arthritis has been flaring up for about 4-5 weeks and I can deal with the pain, what I can't deal with is the exhaustion. I had to give up both my long run and long ride this weekend due to it. I'd prefer to avoid steroids especially with my 70.3 coming up in less than 2 weeks but I need some relief.
Don't know if this is just a rant or if I want opinions -- just really frustrated. I'm feeling well trained for Steelhead and I don't expect a problem for Wednesday's race. Maybe a forced a taper is what I need? Want to be out there right now running/swimming/biking but just can't between the pain and the exhaustion. Hopefully I'll get some relief of some kind tomorrow.

Hey Sax,
I wish I had an answer for you, but I'm too new in the pharmacy program. I don't know much about what all steroids do besides relieve inflammation and inhibit the immune system.
I hope you find some relief, and I'm sure you're trained well enough that you'll have a great race in a couple weeks.

I will no longer be a spectator, a dreamer, a wonderer. I AM a doer; not only a goal setter, but a goal achiever. I will lead by example rather than word. I will "DARE GREATLY!"

So I've had this rheumy for 5 years now and have never been thrilled -- just really like my original one I guess! She takes a look at me and says "wow you do have some swelling going on." I felt like saying 'no **** Sherlock' but bit my tongue' She continued by saying 'I've never seen any swelling on you ever'.
When I was first diagnosed it took about a year to get my symptoms under control and I was actually on steroids for probably 7 or 8 of those months. The next year I was on and off the steroids as we tried to get things under control Well, things have been pretty good for a while and I think she actually questioned my diagnosis, lol. Maybe not but it was like 'yeah you do have psoriatic arthritis and you've got a healthy amount of swelling going on'.
Oh well, she ended up giving me double dose of cortisone and we'll see what it's like in a couple of weeks. I'm hoping it works -- I'm already on immune system suppressants and I think the next option is to up those.
Looking forward to doing some swimming tomorrow and getting my bike ready for tomorrow night's race. Got to change my tire (4th time it's gotten a flat, grr)

Do you have guttate psoriasis? I used to get it from strep exposure when I was a lot fatter. My skin was awful. A coworker of mine would get it and she developed arthritis from it-in wheel chair for a while.
Since I lost weight I get a spot here or there, but not the coverage like I used to.
They used to give me UVB light treatment, but even 30 seconds exposure would burn me.
Then the Dr. told me to hit the tanning beds and it cleared up quickly.
So, did they give you pills or shots?

'just' plaque psoriasis. One of my friends has guttate psoriasis and I know that's no fun. Since I was diagnosed I spent about 18 months clear but other than that I've had at least a small patch somewhere (about 10 years now).
I've never done the light treatments but with all the exercise I'm doing I'm in the sun A LOT and things seem to be clearing up finally. I may need to get a prescription for the tanning beds, lol.
They gave me a shot -- I would've done the pills but am really glad we didn't go that route. Plus no taper on the shot. I'm sure it's the placebo effect, but I already feel less tired. Swelling/pain is unchanged but I'm feeling really excited for my swim class in an hour and if I continue to feel like this my dog will LOVE a run tonight!
If it wasn't for Humira/Enbrell I'm sure I would've been like your coworker. When I was first diagnosed it got to the point where it was hard for me to move. Fortunately I got on Enbrell quickly (it was a trial drug at that point and they stopped taking new patients for 10 months shortly after I enrolled in the program) and saw pretty dramatic results pretty quickly.
Your pregnancy flaring up your psoriasis? I could've sworn I've read that pregnancy can cause flair ups, especially for guttate psoriasis.

Nope, my psoriases is in check. I was worried about it coming back with my weight gain. I'm hoping not to get Gestational Diabetes. I have my test tomorrow. When I was on Metformin before sugery I had really bad psoriasis. My body was so outta whack!
I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) so my chance of GD is higher.
Anyhoo-back to skin.
Psoriasis doing well-I don't have any. My hormones were already wacky. Now with having a boy my acne has gotten worse.

Lets get one thing straight, YOU CANT MISS THE STEELHEAD HIM!!!!... Okay, I'm all better... Seriously do what is best for you, but maybe a little extra taper might just be what you need.
My Mom has Rhuematoid Arthritis, so I know exactly what youre going through.
Let me know what your plans are for next Friday/Saturday. It would be great to meet you before the chaois of Saturday morning.

That cortisone shot has REALLY helped!!! Felt great in my race tonight -- gonna do up a report in a minute. There's not a CHANCE I'll be missing Steelhead don't worry. Looking forward to it WAY too much -- hopefully I'll get a 60 mile or so bike in tomorrow morning.
Just looked on line and our bib #'s are up! I'm 1586 and I'll be racing in the clydesdale division starting wave #13. What about you?
I'm planning on checking in Friday afternoon. The one thing I need to do is drive the bike course -- want to see what it's like. Planning on checking the bike that night. I was late on the hotel so I'll be staying about 30 miles from there, oh well. When I get things more concrete I'll let you know so we can meet up.
