What an awesome experience. It started last night when I finally got to meet Dan and my daughters and I had the privelege of eating dinner with him. Texas is a huge state and although we both live here, this was our 1st opportunity to meet up. Thanks Dan for spending your evening with us and sharing your time and some great advice with us.

It was an awesome experience for me. Seeing everyone racing was something else. It made me really wish I was out racing on the course, but I will be out there next year. I was able to work with both my daughters directing riders to turn at a very sharp turn. We were very fortunate because we were actually right at an aid station with port o joys and all the gatorade endurance, water, and power bar gels we wanted, of course we only had water and gatorade. We were about 25-28 miles into the bike course at the opposite end. My daughters did a great job of helping me direct riders and being awesome cheerleasders for every one of the racers from the first one around the turn to the last one. All 3 of us are having trouble talking this evening. We saw about 2600 triathletes Daring Greatly today and I was so proud of every one of them and honored to be called a triathlete myself!

For all of you who havent had an opportunity to volunteer at a large event, go for it. It is a very fulfilling opportunity. It will also make you want to get on the course that much more.

I will no longer be a spectator, a dreamer, a wonderer. I AM a doer; not only a goal setter, but a goal achiever. I will lead by example rather than word. I will "DARE GREATLY!"

And you know what, the racers really appreciate that you are there.

I had them thank me during the race, and I had them come by after the race and thank us again for volunteering.  I really do not know how they managed it during the race.  I appreciated the help during my first half marathon, but I was so focuse on finishing I dont remember anyone except the one guy who was handing out high 5s to all the runners.

It really felt good to help out.

Great post Darrell,
Everyone should give up one race and volunteer at some point.  Its just a little bit of giving back.

Scott
