I just have a question. I am just starting the process of lap band surgery. I was just wondering if you can ever drink a carbonated beverage again? My husband had gastric bypass 4 years ago and he can . Just curious.

I was told it wasnt comfortable to drink it if it is not flat? I havent had Diet Coke in a month and I dont miss it too much. I was drinking it like it was going out of style preop too.  I love the Special K20 Protein Water Mix in Pink Lemonade now and drink that A LOT!! :)

Drinking carbonated drinks is a great way for your husband to permanently stretch out his pouch.

With good restriction you likely won't want to drink them.  Besides, they are sooo bad for you, carbonation causes bone loss.  It grabs the calcium from your bones.

I was told never again by doc....If I just pick one up to look at it, my husband freaks like I just picked up a snake or something! He is my watch dog. I'm proud to say, with his help, I haven't had a soda since November of 2007!!! I don't miss it too badly. Sometimes, when certain things are going on...like a hot day, or at a pizza place or something...but over all, I find water more refreshing....and very versital!

Why do I love food when it doesn't love me back?  Stupid food....doesn't understand our relationship yet!

My surgeon and NUT said the jury is out..conflicting studies if you do the research on the bone loss claim, but bottom line is that diet soda is no benefit to your body, flavored water is definitely a better choice.

My surgeon had lapband surgery himself and said Soda wasn't great but once in a great while would not hurt me.  When I was early on I decided not to have it at all because frankly I was addicted to Cherry Pepsi so I just didn't do it.  Now On a rare occassion I will imbibe but hardly at all and then sometimes the carbonation bothers me and sometimes it doesn't.  Usually it's just when we go out for pizza as a family and they get a pitcher.  I really do not miss it anymore and you won't either but yes that was a big concern of mine too before surgery because I loved the stuff so I totally know where you are coming from.

I used to live on diet Sprite, if I could have gotten it thru an IV it would have been perfect! I haven't had any in over a year and don't miss it at all. I (of course) tried a sip and that was before I even had good restriction and NEVER again. It was sooooo painful, some folks say they can drink it if it's flat but I don't ever want to try it again.

I'm a soda drinker, In fact, I have a diet ginger ale on the table now.  Do I recommend it for others?  Nope, do what your doc tells ya (that's my story and i'm sticking to it).

As my restriction has increased I have found though that my tolerance has decreased for sodas.  I'll likely drink less than 1/2 of the can tonight.  There was a post a few days ago about this and it seems that those who have trouble burping are less likely to tolerate the carbonation.  Luckily I'm a great belcher!  I probably have 2 or 3 sodas in a week now when I used to have that many in a day!

My bariatric group  (7 surgeons) are all over the board on the soda debate.  A couple of the docs say drink it if you can tolerate it,  a few say no more sodas EVER after WLS and then a couple are noncommittal about it.
