I had the sleeve done in October 07, I am bipolor Type II too.  I could not tolerated the amount of medication that I was on before surgery so my schrink had to decrease my pills dramatically.  I am unable to take certain medications because they make me too spacy and the doctor says that the meds are absorbed much more quickly because I have no stomach.  I also take xanax XR and have never had a problem with the extended release.

Topic: RE: Antabuse and Sugar Alcohols
I had the good fortune to already know I had multiple addictions prior to my surgery.  I started my recovery in therapy for my binge eating disorder, and within two months was participating in AA.  After I got sober, I gained more weight.

It is a shame that more surgeons do not educate their patients about the psychological issues that are involved in obesity, and weight gain.  I have a Masters in Social Work and have done extensive research on eating disorders and addictions.  I believe that WLS patients should be in therapy for their mental health issues before, during and after their surgery.

Good luck.  I guess my suggestion about the sugar alcohols and antabuse struck me as a chemical/medical issue more than a mental health issue.  Hence my suggestion to speak with a doctor.

I actually dug out my old journal - that I have not used for 4 or 5 years and put it in the suitcase. I do appreciate your comments - that helped me put this into clearer perspective. I am going to be able to have visits from my family (just not my dogs....) and we are going to do some family counseling too. So - unlike those in the military - I will have contact.
Thank you again - you really helped me today.

Hi there--I have been separated from my family due to military obligations and that separation was very difficult.  6 months at a time!  I wrote lots and lots of letters and journal'd about my experience so that my family could read it once I returned.  Yes, our situations are different but being separated from my family and living a million miles away in a foreign country was very hard and depressing--I think I cried daily.  I personally could not talk about my kids much while I was away or look at their pictures--it was just too hard and would make me too emotional but the letters helped me express how I was feeling --even if I decided not to send them for one reason or another.  I also tried to stay super busy--no idle time to let my mind wander.  I worked out 1.5-2 hrs a day and listened to my iPod with tons of fast-paced uplifting music--like "I will SURVIVE" and silly disco music like that.  I hope all of this helps just a tiny bit--my heart goes out to you and although we are strangers, I'm proud of you for doing this.  It takes a lot of courage.

Blessings,
Shammy

I've talked to a several nurses and done research online, I haven't yet talked to a doctor.  That may be the next step.  My goal when I get my masters is to counsel weight loss surgery pateints and just weight loss people in general.  I'm just finding with the wieght loss surgery comes a lot of transfer addcitions and this was a question I had.  Not sure if I said all this before...sorry if I did.  Thanks.

I was first started on it in a 28 day program and I was very excited, I guess thinking it was my miracle cure, unfortunatly I found out I also could drink on it.  Although, it is a tool that can be used to assist with our recovery, just like meetings, etc....

I wish you luck, I remember having the same feelings, it's a great beginning.
