Topic: RE: Do you track?
Hi,

It is a very good practice to track your activities which results in weight loss or weight gain. This will always help you to get the correct diet and excercise level.

But in a busy schedule it will be quite tough to track this. If some one can help me around with an easy tool to track and also let me know how to use the tool.

Also I will be quite obliged if someone tell me the tool specified by any surgeon with the surgeon name.

Thanks

Topic: RE: Covered by Insurance???

Hello, I'm from Atlanta and I'm extremely interested in this procedure.  I wonder would my insurance cover this procedure, if so, I might just make that trip to Florida so Dr. Rudledge assistant will do my surgery.  Is anyone interested?

Hi Paula,

I understand more than you might know. Ben lost his job in January and hasn't been able to find another, so it's been a stressful year and will be a tight holiday season. That said, like you, we are so very grateful for all that we do have.

Wishing you a better new year.

Hi,

Well, nothing planned at all.  These are lean days.  I will probably decorate the house.  I have my parent's very old decorations but it is alot of fun.

I'm just thankful and grateful for what I do have!

Clueless about weight loss and weight loss surgery of any kind.

Topic: Do you have a plan for the holidays?

I don't know about you, but I think that Thanksgiving has to be one of my all time favorite holidays. That said, it's also one that has ruined me in the past. Of course, one of the things I'll be giving thanks for this year is knowing that I won't 'ruin' myself this year because I have my 'tool', but also because I have a plan. I don't really think it matters what your plan is, but it does matter that you have one. I don't think it really matters which surgery you had or where you are in your journey, but what does matter is thinking about what you are going to do and then following through.

For me, I know that among other things, I will have pumpkin pie with whipped cream, but I'll probably work to reduce some of the carbs while maintaining the flavor.

* I'll limit how much I have and be aware of how much of whatever it is that I'm consuming.

* I'll load with protein before carbs and fats, but to be honest, I'll have carbs and fats and I'll enjoy them without feeling guilty because I have a plan.

* I'll also go for a walk to help walk some of it off.

* I'll be sure to go a little leaner a day or two before Thanksgiving and a couple of days after... Probably a few more protein and salad based meals, dropping the amount of carbs.

* I'll weigh myself to keep an eye on how I'm doing. Don't get me wrong. I'm not obsessing of freaking out about the upcoming holiday.

I'm actually feeling really confident and comfortable about the approaching holiday knowing that the combination of my tool and my choices will hold me in good stead, allowing me to maintain my hard won losses... and the health and quality of life gains that came with them.

So.... What is your plan for the holidays?

Topic: One Warm Coat

Do you have one warm coat that is too big for you now?

One Warm Coat is a project that helps to clothe those who need a warm coat to help them through the cold months. I know that many of us find ourselves in the unique position of not needing some of the warm coats we have used in the past. Of course we all know how hard it is to find larger clothing and how expensive it can be, so if you have warm coat that is in good condition that you think might help someone, please consider donating it to this lovely campaign.

We will collect coats at our December Support Group meeting and deliver them to the Raleigh Burlington Coat factory, but if you are unable to attend that event and want to donate a coat, please do. For information about location near you, you can find locations here.

Wishing you all a lovely, warm holiday season.

Topic: RE: Can someone confirm MGB info?
Thanks, Cindy.
I'll try showing her the video. I'll be staying with her for the month I recoup after getting the DS in two weeks. It's kind of funny that she would have it so mixed up since she was a nurse for years (RN), but it must have something to do with the language barrier with her Colombian doc.
Good luck with your procedure!!

Renee,
You are right---there is know way they attached the stomach at the large intestine.  They attach it approx 6 ft down in the small intestines---bypassing the large portions of obsorbtion that makes to gain weight.  I am having my MGB on Dec 11, 2009.  I have several friends that have had the procedure.  Also there is a video on u-tube of the procedure that you can show your mom.

Topic: Recipe for a wonderful Chicken and Bean Salad

Here's a great Recipe from Cooking Light for a wonderful Chicken and White Bean Salad. Full of flavor and protein. I think it works just as well with turkey.

White Bean and Roasted Chicken Salad

Cannellini beans, or white kidney beans, are smaller than Great Northern beans and add just the right texture. Great for picnics or lazy-day suppers, this salad stirs together in a flash.

Salad:
2 cups coarsely chopped skinless, boneless rotisserie chicken
1 cup chopped tomato
1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion
1/3 cup sliced fresh basil
2 (16-ounce) cans cannellini beans or other white beans, rinsed and drained

Dressing:

1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 garlic cloves, minced

To prepare salad, place first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; stir gently to combine.

To prepare dressing, combine vinegar and remaining ingredients, stirring with a whisk. Drizzle over salad, tossing gently to coat.

Yield:  5 servings (serving size: about 1 1/4 cups)

CALORIES 369 (25% from fat); FAT 10.1g (sat 2g,mono 5.7g,poly 1.7g); IRON 4mg; CHOLESTEROL 45mg; CALCIUM 117mg; CARBOHYDRATE 41.5g; SODIUM 342mg; PROTEIN 29.2g; FIBER 9.6g

Topic: RE: Warning!!! Problems deleted and blocked from Clos Site!
Hi, sorry the response took so long.  I didn't keep the sites and had to search them out--was not able to find all of them, but below are some links--

http://en.allexperts.com/q/Bariatric-Surgery-3492/2008/11/MGB-clos.htm
(for this go down and select Dr. Pilcher's letters--he has a response to MGB surgery question)

Google Good Reasons to Avoid Mini Gastric Bypass surgery to find article-could not get a link to work

It was my cousin who had the surgery done by a surgeon in Missouri.  The original surgery took 3 hours--not the 1 hour it usually needs--so there must have been some issues there.  My Aunt was in the waiting room very scared.

She lost all her weight and kept on losing--suffered GERD, dumping, had a kidney stone.  She went back to stage I and stage II diets and still kept losing--could not keep food down.  My Aunt asked me to research doctors in St. Louis who performed gastric bypass surgery reversals.  My sister works in a medical reference library and gave me a list of surgeons registered as doing reversals.  When my cousin contacted them one by one, not one would even see her.  Her surgeon wasn't returning her calls and neither was Dr. Rutledge.  My cousin told me she was afraid they would just let her die, that nobody would be willing to do anything.  She tried posting on CLOS and got thrown out.

I went on my computer and found out none of these other bariatric surgeons perform the MGB--so none of them would reverse a procedure the are not familiar with performing.  I continued my research and found articles, blogs, etc.  Have to admit they are kind of difficult to find--not like all the kudo articles which come up so easily.

Finally, after threats and angry phone calls with his office, the surgeon agreed to see my cousin and subsequently performed the reversal.  She weighed 103 lbs at the time of the surgery and after some setbacks she is now gaining weight.  She looked and felt anorexic, skeletal, etc.

My cousin had two friends who had the MGB and are happy.  In my research I determined that all of the weight loss surgeries can have major complications, so you should really be in physical peril from your weight before you consider any of them.  My problem with the MGB is that they downplay the complications and do not want to hear from you when they occur.  I also believe they should somehow tell people that this is not an "accepted procedure" by the majority of surgeons, and let them make a truly educated decision.  If they don't deal with the problems they probably don't enter it into their database for "unsuccessful results."

I have not actually looked at this site in a while.  Coming back I was able to find "bad results" fairly quickly.  The one issue which seems repetitive  is the problem people have with contacting their doctor when they have problems.  NOT GOOD.
