Thanks for explaining that Grace.  Yet another piece of misinformation, this time from the trainer at my very expensive gym.  (I mention this only because this is not some minimum wage 'trainer' at a chain gym)  It seems he might not know the difference between BMI and BF.  He definitely told me my BMI was 46, not 55 as the charts say.  How disappoing...really...who can we trust to give us the right info?

Not wanting to sound catty but not sure how the wage someone earns lends credence to the information they give, if this were so you would have believed the dietician as they hardly make minimum wage. I also wonder why you did not "researc" what BMI meant instead of taking your trainer's information. I agree there is a great deal of misinformation floating around on this forum. ALL must be taken "with a grain of salt" and ultimately it is the responsibility of each person to do the research and organize the information in a way they can "digest it". Too many go by what is said than what is true.

To Oknee...

The reason I equate a trainer's knowledge based on pay scale is because many of the trainers at the chain gyms who earn minimum wage, ie...Fitness One and Extreme Fitness, often have no more education than a several weekend CanFit certificate.  They often learn on the job over several years.  My trainer is a Kinesiologist, has over 15 years experience and has won many titles.  He should know better.

As far as researching BMI what's really to research?  It's a crude measure of how much body fat someone has.  In retrospect, what I actually had was a BIA test which is another measure of body fat done with electric current...it just happens to be more reliable, however as Grace says, not completely reliable because it depends on hyrdration and several other factors.

So really...BMI and BIA are essentially the 'same' thing...a measure of one's body fat, done in two different ways.

OK BMI- Body Mass Index. Height to Weight ratio. . .nothing to do with your body fat, thus the c/o of its use to determine eligibility for WLS it does not take into account lean body mass (muscle).

I think this is all getting a little ridiculous, no? We're just picking now & losing sight of what really matters.

Never Again will I look back in vain, cause todays not the past I don't need to relive it!

I agree Nicole, but the intent of the post (IMHO) was that there is a great deal of fabricated information out there and that its important to do your research. To take that one step further, I want to say that before you post this new found "knowledge" please ensure its correct. Don't perpetuate a myth. The point of the original post was good. I did appreciate what was aid about the Optifast statement.

What exactly is getting ridiculous?  This is some intelligent, healthy debate.  Am I missing something?

Thanks for viewing its true intent, many read hoping the threads deteriorate to a cat fight. But when valid points are made and respectfully questioned and commented on the result is clear information trading which is a valuable commodity.

I personally like when we can have discussion here without the fighting if possible.   Good points I've seen here.

"Number of carbs per person varies...for some it's 20, the lucky ones can eat 40 - 70. My number is 30."

How was this number calculated?  I would love to find out what mine is.

Thanks for all the information.
