Knees worse after surgery

Just looking for some advice/similar stories.

Since surgery my knees have been very painful.  It seems that the more weight I lose the worse they get.  It is to the point that I am avoiding stairs and have people asking me what is wrong with me when I walk.

I brought this up at my last visit to the clinic and the nurse there, not Audrey she was on vacation, said that it was because the fat wasn't there to pad my joints any more.

Then I went to my Dr. last week as I was fed up and he told me that it was because of the loss of subcutaneous tissue ( which I google and to me seems like that is a fancy word for fat).  He says it will come back and I need to swim.

So off I will go to aquafit soon.  But in the meanwhile I want to know if anyone has had this issue and what you did to help it.  I was thinking about Glucosomine (sp?) but the nurse in Guelph on my last visit said that that was an nsaid.

Please...if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Kim :)

I just read today that Vitamin C helps your joints.  I have been taking it daily since surgery...and my knees have actually improved - maybe that's why?

I have been taking a multi vitamin but maybe I should add in an extra vitamin C too.  Thanks. :)

Glucosamine is not an NSAID. It is a supplement.

Hi Kim ... nice to see you posting... congrats on your success so far.  You've done a great job.

I'm no doctor, but I'm wondering if the ligaments have loosened up since your weight loss ... Several years ago I had a terrible bout of psoriatic arthritis (in my knee) with lots of swelling etc and afterwards I had terrible lingering pain.  It took a long time and a lot of work to strengthen the supporting muscles ... maybe someone more in the know could give you some specific exercises that would help.

I recall that you have psoriasis ... it might be worth going to see a rheumatologist and asking to be specifically tested (it's a blood test) for psoriatic arthritis.  I was told that it is very different from some other forms of arthritis and that there are specific treatments for this variety.....hope this info helps somewhat.  Good luck with solving the mystery.

I will ask my Dr. about the test Mo.  Thanks for the suggestion. :)  How have you been doing?

I'm good, Kim...thanks for asking.  I'm down just over 70 lbs and feeling sooooo great.  Dealing with some head issues, but I'm determined to get to goal "someday"....at this point, I'd be thrilled if I could hit the 100 lb loss target by my surgiversary (june 22)....wish me luck.

big hugs
Mo

PS my psoriasis cleared up dramatically after surgery but has slowly returned tho not nearly as bad as it was before .... interestingly, it tends to flare up if I have any kind of pasta / bread etc.....weird, huh?  I avoid these things as much as possible and this is great incentive to continue.

My knees and hips ached like hell after dropping a lot of weight.  My GP figured it was my body still adjusting to the new weight and centre of gravity.  I take 3000 mg of Omega 3 fish oil daily as it's supposed to help with any joint pain.  It's definitely helped a lot.  Worth a shot and we all could use more Omega 3 in our diet.
