Working OUT please advise............
So I have a very hectic schedule come the end of august as I am a student fulltime. My day starts at 6 am and ends at 10 pm. (school from 815 to 130 and work from 130 to 10 pm). I don't have the time to work out. Does anyone have any advice or has anyone had this type of schedule and what did you do to get some exercise in? Come summer time I have the time to excercise and stuff. This is all over whelming. Surgery is August 10th and I feel like I don't have everything down pat like I should be. I read so many posts about protein and vitamins and this and that. I scratch that off my list and at the info then someone says something better and scratch that off and change it. Going bonkers. Has anyone had the Gastric and what are you views on it? I still have not given my doc a final answer if I want the sleeve or the bypass.
Thanks,
Betty Jo

My view is: You HAVE to try to find the time to do some sort of exercise AT LEAST a few times per week! I have a very busy schedule too, I know it's hard to squeeze it in. 30 min walks, a bike ride, going to the gym, swimming... anything for some exercise.
This surgery isnt just about making your stomach smaller to lose weight BUT to do the things we should be doing thru our lives anyways! Eating healthy, taking our vitamins, exercise!
Get up at 530 and do something for half an hour
I had the Roux-en-y gastric bypass and I love it! Everyone is different and we all need to research every procedure to really find out what would be best for ourselves
Good luck :D

Hi Betty Jo,
I have a similar schedule with two jobs, and I joined a 24 hour gym. I go after work around 10 or 11 depending on the day. It would depend on your energy level though. I read an article on Sparkpeople.com about biggest workout mistakes and one of them is sacrificing sleep for work outs so I try to pay attention to how I'm feeling. If I'm exhausted I'll skip and double up on the weekend. You could also try walking or running/walking stairs on your lunch hour (if you have one) or between classes.
Good Luck!!

I know that you're probably not going to like to hear what my answer is, but here it is anyways. Get up an hour earlier and get your exercise in!
Believe me, I know all about a hectic schedule, at 32, I work full-time (most weeks in excess of 50 hours) and I attend University full-time. Add to that, study and looking after a home. I completely understand being busy. I now get up at 5am rather than sleeping in for the extra hour. I find that by exercising, I feel much better and energized than I would if I got an extra hour of sleep. I average 6-7 hours most nights, sometimes less. But obviously, our current routine hasn't been working for us, or we wouldn't be here on these forums talking about WLS. We need to change things up, and yes, I hate change as much as the next person, but the whole point to WLS is to change our lives.
If you don't want to wake a full hour earlier to head to the gym, try some at home routines, such as Power 90 (not P90X). The routines are 30 minutes and give you a good amount of exercise as well as core strengthening. I've recently started this to prepare for surgery and while it's tough to get through right now, I feel it getting easier!
Also, when on campus, park the car further away and walk to classes. Even the simplest of tasks can help in adding to your exercise counter. =)

There is good and bad with both surgery's. You and only you can decide on what surgery is best for you. No one can make that decision for you. The best thing you can do is read up on both surgery's and also talk it over with you doctor. As for exercising you must find the time. Were there is will there is a way. Even if you go for walks on your breaks. You need to exercise. Once you get into it it will become part of your life. You need to be willing to make changes even if it means getting up earlier or going to bed later. Start reading and good luck on your decision

Hi there. Just my 2 cents...
I work mornings Monday - Friday with kids. The I come home to a 19 month old toddler who has more energy than the energizer bunny. Between laundry, dishes (we don't have a dishwasher), my nightly sweep up , cleaning up the days toys and making/giving the little man dinner, bath and bed, I have ZERO time to work out! And by the time he's in bed I am POOPED! BUT...
I'm about to go upstairs and do my power walk on the treadmill. I do it every weeknight for 30 mins... I literally FORCE myself. By writing this post, I'm procrastinating a little more lol! Rest assured though, I will do it. On the weekends we are usually at the cottage doing some sort of project, so that counts towards my workout... it's not realistic to do it every day :) Last weekend we put up the GIANT gazebo... took 2 hours between myself and my DH, but I felt so good that I COULD do it!
I find that I sleep better after a good sweaty workout!

Can you:
- go for a walk during a break? once at school; once at work? 10 min each?
- do an extra flight stairs?
- so some step ups on the bottom step (go up and down several times, like doing a step class)
- make exercise the first thing you do on saturday and sunday if your schedule/hours are different?
- park further?
Every step and every effort counts.
This is exactly the advice I would give. Every little bit adds up.
