Requesting File Transfer
I went to the info session in Ottawa May 20th 2011. I gave them a call last month to see where they were on the list, and they had said March 7th... I called again today and they are still working on the same day... and this is for booking the "next step appts" . I had opted to have my surgery at Humber, but have everything else done through Ottawa... Im starting to think I should just do a file transfer to Humber and hope that it goes quicker.... I have seen timelines from people getting surgery in ottawa that had information sessions a week before me, already booking appts.... sorry for sounding impatient...
Has anyone gone through this, and has anyone had they're files transfered to HRRH from Ottawa? Has it sped things up...? any advice would be great, thanks

Hi there - I was thinking of doing the same thing so I called WMC yesterday to see how things were going and asked if I should transfer to HRRH. I was told that the two clinics are about even now for timing. I think I heard recently that there are now 3 surgeons in Ottawa and they are adding some extra surgeries on Thursday (which they have not done previously).
My timeline has been good (just waiting for Education class and meet the surgeon) as I was referred in Jan/Feb and had my Orientation session in July. I was told they are booking about 3 back for Education classes, so they would be booking April/May peeps for Education classes now. I guess I shouldn't expect to hear anything until December ish???

ya they had told me that the two hospitals are "about even"...it just seems that humber is moving more smoothly... i know that it seems like i want to ru**** i dont i just thought i would have been about to do my blood test or had an appt with a nurse by now at least. I just dont want to wait 2 years for ottawa when i know i could go to humber and be done within the year... plus im going back to school in jan... if i dont get my surgery before december... im hoping for a date where ill have march break or something... let me know what you do... im seriously considering the transfer.. im from Trenton... so i am a lot closer to toronto then ottawa anyhow.
hi, i am in trenton also....i went to ottawa and stay that way....i was 18 months when all said and done......i had my surgery aug of this year and waiting for 18 months...it is a long process and ottawa is a good hospital....the nurses are great......i am here if you need any answers.....good luck with your journey
I was on the list in Ottawa for almost 18 months. Finally in December 2010 I had everything transferred to Humber and had surgery just 5 months later in May 2011. I then transferred everything back to Ottawa for post-op follow-ups. Humber is MUCH faster than Ottawa however Ottawa is a MUCH better hospital. Ive dealt with dietitians at both hospitals and Ottawa is far superior! Its just an all around better experience in Ottawa.
Best of luck

I hear you. I was referred for surgery in December 2010 and was at the info class in late March 2011. I have heard nothing since and it's incredibly frustrating. And like you, I have seen people go ahead of me who were referred after me and I just don't understand. I called a few weeks back and said I would be willing to transfer my file and was told that the timelines are about the same now, so it wouldn't make much difference. You'd think a big city like Ottawa would have more surgeons. As for March 7th, that's crazy. When I called in mid August I was told they were working on March.
I am not the type who would ever call and nag or complain.... that's just not my style. But I just see this as a very helpful tool in getting my life back. I have made some big changes and I still feel like there's something missing. I think the day that call comes I'll probably burst into tears (with happiness of course!!).

Ya that date it rediculous... Im not sure that they are just being told to tell people that date... thats what it seems like. I dont understand how they could be on the same day a month later... I made the decision to transfer my file to Humber yesterday. At first when I called they said they arent transferring files because the wait time is about "the same" I then proceeded to tell her that it was more of a cost/time travel issue....and she is sending my file to another woman who takes care of transfers... Even if they are about the same, I still think that I will get to where I would like to be a lot quicker going to Humber. I dont like to call or nag people either, but it just feel nessesary to do it in this case... I just dont want to be forgotten, or put on the back burner. Im with you, ill be crying happy tears too! I wish you luck, and hope things start moving for you soon!!
i was referred to ottawa mid june ,got a letter within 2 weeks for orientation but because of recieving the letter late due to postal strike all the classes for july were booked , so i had orientation aug 19th at the session they said if we wanted to have surgery at humber it would cut a couple months wait off ..so i wrote humber on the paper they gave me ,they said it would be a few months before i hear anything because they were working on march's appointments ,,i called last week asking if i should transfer my whole file to humber to get in faster they said things have picked up in ottawa and they are running on about the same time frame now as humber ,this is a helpfull site i got off a post here

When I went to my orientation May 20th, they said the same thing, that it would cut time off to go to Humber (which I opted for as well). We were also told that people who dont have any health issues that they needed to work out before having surgery, eg. smoking, certain medications that it would also cut time off of the wait. I called them last month and they were on March appts, and called again and they were still on the date March 7th.... it just doesn't give me much hope hearing that date again. Yesterday I made the decision to transfer my file to Humber. I hope things go quicker and with some appts in the near future, and hopefully a surgery date early next year. fingers a crossed. Thanks for the site, its very helpful and neat to see the differences in hospitals for wait times.
Wishing you all the luck, and hoping you hear something sometime soon.

I just don't understand what causes them to push some folks ahead in the cue and make others wait so long. Other than having a BMI of about 47, I have very few health issues. I don't smoke, and my only real health concerns right now are reflux and moderate sleep apnea (I am on CPAP for it)... both of these conditions came about after I gained weight. I was referred in December and I have read about others who were referred in December as well, and attended the info session at around the same time as me (in March). I am just curious what they (WMC) base their appointment scheduling on.
Maybe it's time to start making a pest of myself after all. Waiting around quietly and being patient seems to accomplish nothing.
