The Twelve Days of Christmas

Today it's 13 days until Chistmas so the Twelve Days of Christmas gifts start tomorrow.  This is a bit of fun that I've been doing for a couple of years now with our teenage son - gives him something to look forward too and helps build the excitement for the holidays. I found as he got older that Christmas just wasn't as much fun so I started this new tradition. I thought maybe he would think he was too old this year - but nope he asked last week if I was doing it again this year.

My plan for this year is:
1 Axe body wash gift box
2 T-shirts with funny sayings
3 quarts of eggnog
4 pairs of socks
5 loonies
6 bottles of Powerade
7 pairs of underwear
8 boxes of kraft dinner
9 chocolate bars
10 fingers in new pair of gloves
11 gift certificates for a slice of pizza and pop near the high shcool
12 pack of pop

Do you have any fun family traditions at your house?

We do the traditional Reveillon on the 24th.  We sit around trimming a tree. listening to Christmas songs, drinking way too much and cooking up a storm to eat after midnight.  Throw in Midnight mass for some even though it's never at midnight any longer.

On Christmas Day, we say grace and it always includes talking about the empty chairs around the table of those that have passed on.  They may be gone but are not forgotten by any.

The other fun thing for me is going to the mall with my dad who absolutely hates it and we just hang out and have coffee as we don't need to buy anything and run into people that we haven't seen in a year as everyone is there it seems.

That is so cute, I wish I had this years ago for my son. I think he'll just be happy this year to get a bottle of booze since he turns 19 on the 7th of January. Just a right of passage, just like buying a lottery ticket for their 18th birthday. None of my kids have bought another ticket but I know they have bought another bottle of booze.

Oh forgot, we drive around town to look at Christmas lights on the 24th after church. My husband has goodies and snacks for opening gifts and we open them that night. Funny thing is my husband and I grew up with doing this at both our homes.

Thats awesome Muriel!!  I usually do a lot of baking but this it won't be as much...although I asked hubby and my oldest what their favourite cookie was and both said at different times shortbread!!  so shortbread it is!!  I like Christmas eve service at church, but not this year, we'll be visiting hubbys' dad in the nursing home....  since Christmas is on Sunday this year, there is a church service from 11-12...so that will be nice to attend.  Then we'll come home and I'll get dinner ready for around 4ish...we are pretty traditional .....  Patti K.

Glad to help you make a new Christmas tradition.  Let me know what your son thinks.  Mine is already trying to guess what he is getting tomorrow!

What a great idea, lucky boy!

Christmas eve my dh, son and daughter all have a quiet night alone, playing board games.  We always get at least one new one and the kids (23 & 19) usually exchange their gifts as well.  Oh and we don't have supper, usually just fun snacks.

that's pretty good,
WE had an advent calendar every year but as my son got old, and the chocolate got worse in those things, we decided if we were going to do it then we would buy the good stuff.

So last year we bought a Lindtd advent calendar. We would alternate, odd and even days. we would try to guess what kind we were going to get, ball or bar, snowman or santa etc. made it kinda fun.

But alas this year he wasn't into it, he's 21 and (been there done that attitude) Im sure as he grows older he'll remember the good ole days and do it with his kids.

My DH and I make a point of going out for dinner and then touring the christmas lights in the city. we used to include our son, but again, he's too old for that now.... But we carry on. It's nice and some good family time
