DISASTER
RNY on 10/02/12
I was scheduled to have surgery January 25th.
January 5th at 4 AM I woke up and couldn't breathe.
ER CAT scan showed that I have a pulmonary embolism. Lucky it is small enough that it didn't kill me. BUT, that means that I am on Coumadin for 3 - 6 months minimum.
Therefore, NO SURGERY. Maybe not ever. I can't tell you how upset I am.
All I can do is hope that it dissolves in that time, that the one in the back of my left leg dissolves and that I will not be on the drug all my life. Then maybe, just maybe, I can have the surgery.
In the meantime...dietary changes are first line defence for weight loss and moderate excercise.
Good Luck to everyone. Maybe I'll be back in a year or so.

Hi Joanne!
I can't even imagine how scared, and disappointed you are. You were very lucky to survive the embolism.
I hope you stick around on the forum, and maybe we can all support you as you try to make some changes to your diet. It's so great to have a support team behind you. Don't give up! Take the medications prescribed, and really try to stick to dietary changes. I know its very hard.
Please hang in there!!! Don't give up hope, there are always solutions to problems!!

I am so sorry this has happened and can only imagine the dissappointment after the fear settled down. If there is a silver lining, I'm glad this happened before rather than after. If, for some reason, you are at a higher risk for a pulmonary embolism, better to be aware pre-op than blindsided with it post op in a particularly dangerous way.
I hope treatment proceeds smoothly and that (despite the extra wait) things work themselves out as soon as possible.
Andrea.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! I can't imagine how upset and disappointed you must be. I hope that you are able to get off the medication at some point and have the surgery.
I really admire your attitude about dietary changes and exercise. If I were in your position, I would probably be binge eating. You have an amazing outlook.

Very sorry to hear this Joanne, but very glad that you're okay! I have had terrible troubles myself with DVTs and a CAT scan showed that I too had a pulminary emoblism at one point. I have been on Warfarin for a couple of years now and will likely be on it for life, as I continue to have occassional DVTs. Having said that, a gynocologist had no problem in scheduling me for a procedure - just had to go off the warfarin for a few days prior is all. So don't give up hope! The DVT and the embolism WILL disolve, and rather quickly too. There is still hope for you.
All the best and keep in touch,
Karen

surgery may be postponed but you would be surprised what conditions they will still do the surgery with, my mom had surgery in november a sleeve rather than RNY as there for she would be under less time but she has been on and off cumadin, and is always on warfin, has many heart issues including many heart attacks, atrial fibrilation, super ventricular tach, just to name a few. She also has COPD, sleep apnea etc. She was worried that she would be not allowed the surgert but she has had it and is doing great!!!. I think that likely you will have your surgery postponed until you are stable but I wouldn't count yourself out yet!..... good luck and get well soon.

But the good news is they found the clot and its being treated. Thats the important part! Remember sugery is a tool but it does not take it all away. You CAN lose weight with or without that tool, just set your mind to it. And down the road you may get the tool anyway!
