How many calories per day?

I've read a lot of different information in different places on this site and others, about how many calories per day to consume after your RNY.

And, yes, I will check with my clinic on Monday...but,

I'm just curious what anyone on the Ontario forum has to say....

For example I am just over 3 weeks out, and I seem to average 500-600 calories per day...sometimes more....and please keep in mind that on average I am getting at least 80g of protein per day...sometimes more. I never seem to have trouble getting the protein in... (just the water).

Starting to see a dramatic slow down in my weight loss...like maybe a whole 2.5lbs for this past week, and it was a whopping total of 3.4lbs the week before... and it seems a little ridiculous to me.

Then I wondered...am I eating too little? Am I eating too much? Or is my body just dealing with the adjustments internally?

I am STILL recovering from this pain in my left side...this muscular whatever it is...but at least I am not taking anything for pain...so that's an improvement.

Who knows...maybe the pain meds were slowing me down?

Any thoughts?

Great question, Toni...and one I would like to know the answer to as well.  I'm ranging between 450-550 in my calories per day and I'm still pretty tired and low energy.  I'm wondering if I should be trying to up my caloric intake to get more energy.  I use water to mix my protein shakes, so I could switch to milk, but then I keep hearing the nutritionists voice in my head saying, "don't drink your calories".

I have no idea about my weight loss since I don't have a scale at home.  I'll be seeing my GP the middle of next week for a check up and another weigh in.  But I do remember reading about stalls around 3 weeks, so I'm not gonna freak out if my weight loss has slowed or stopped suddenly.  You shouldn't either....it will definitely pick back up soon!

Can you post whatever info you get from the TWH nutritionist about daily calorie goals at this point post-op.    Thanks!

I was told don't drink your calories doesn't apply to protein drinks unless they are the incredibly high sugar ones or the protein shakes that are really meal replacements. Mixing it with skim milk will just increase your protein and energy. Not bad at all. Obviously avoid high fat milk because of dumping.

Toni I think you are doing just fine personally.  2.5 lbs per week is freakin fantastic. When in recent memory can you say that you lost a steady 2 lbs per week and maintained it?

500-600 hundred calories is probably all you have room for at this stage.

I think as long as you are getting your protein in and your fluids and taking your vitamins etc all is fine.
Just keep doing what you are doing......and enjoy the wild ride

Ann

ETA: I really don't think there is a set rule about how many calories per day as long as you are getting in your fluids and protein.

In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.

I have never heard from my clinic how many calories just about protein. My goal is 800-900 calories.

Hey Toni!

I bet everything is just fine and that dreaded 2-3 week stall is just trying to torment you.  I think you are still having amazing weight loss!  My weight was the same on the scale for four days in a row this week but now today I am down a pound at last.  I am headed into the 3rd week and prepared to understand that I likely won't lose any weight this week so anything after that is like gravy on some really good mashed potatoes!

My calories are at about 400 right now.

You are probably right about the 2-3 week stall. I just wish I could exercise...that would make me feel like I was helping my cause. I go see my GP in 1.5 weeks, and maybe he can help me to understand the muscular strain on my left side... it just doesn't want to let up...but like I said, at least its not demanding pain killers anymore.

Melissa, you've had one helluva curveball thrown your way since you awoke from surgery, but you are championing through it...and I have all kinds of respect for you!

And now, thanks to your post, I want some gravy & mashed potatoes! LOL

I'm making pot roast later...so maybe just a little....a tablespoon or two would be good  ;)
