age limit
I know there is an age limit to having Gastric bypass. I thought it was 60.
Someone I know is 66 and has gone for the orientation,
Does anyone know if there are exceptions ?
Also does anyone know if there is Financal assistance for someone on the Old Age Pension and how they apply for it if its avail. ?

Patients are having WLS well into their 60's, some surgeons have a cut-off age at 70...It also depends on the individual's state of health..Some hosptals do have age ceilings as well, check with the surgeon(s) who operate there if you have one in mind .
As to being a pensioner, OHIP covers the costs, so other non-covered costs ( purchase of optifast, travel and accommodation etc,) can be claimed as medical expenses on income tax...not 100% covered but some is...Perhaps other seniors here can provide more details ....(I was self pay and remortgaged my home to cover all costs because I was still working and got back about 1/4 to 1/3 through my own company health insurance plan, and on my income tax as "medical expenses"..).

I don't believe it is actually based on a cut-off age, but the general health of the person. My father in law had a double lung transplant at 65, so I'm sure there are plenty of 65 year olds out there healthy enough to have WLS. I would simply start by having the family doc make a referral to the bariatric registry. www.bariatricregistry.ca
If approved, there is no cost involved with the surgery itself, but you will need to be able to pay for pre and post-op medications (could be around $400) and the optifast pre-op diet ($80/week, usually 2-3 weeks) as well as monthly vitamin and mineral supplements (depending on your needs could be $40-50+/month). I don't believe there is extra assistance for this. Your ability to pay for these things is one of the things they consider when deciding whether to approve you for surgery, so you'll have to budget carefully.

Hi Brenda,
There is nothing on the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care about an age limit for bariatric surgery. I do remember that when I attended the orientation session on April 1, 2011 in Ottawa, that they indicated that those in the session that were over the age of 60 would need more medical testing prior to surgery. They asked the people over sixty to raise their hands and there were about 4 people.

ETA: I remember when I met with the behaviourist there were questions about financial stability. I don't remember them exactly because I have no issues.
