Susan_T, you made a very valid statement that forum readers should assume posted advice is "lay" advice unless otherwise noted. . .I am sorry you felt compelled to remove it

Ugh so sorry to hear this Leona! There was a DS'er who went through a serious leak a few years post op. Hers was caused by high dosages of ibuprofen (more than the recommended dose). It was quite serious unfortunately but she has ended up healthy again (though it was certainly a journey. Her name is Dina and she has a blog - livinmg the ds life - if you want to look her up. Good luck and I do hope that it isn't a leak!

sorry to hear about your issues, hope they can resolve/fix things. i am new to the boards to forgive my ignorance but is the VSG different from the Roux-en-Y. And the million dollar question, do you regret your decision to have surgery??

that's my fear since i am in the process. will i regret doing it vs not doing it.

any advice is appreciated,

thanks

Let me start by answering the million dollar question. . .I have absolutely NO regrets regarding my decision to have WLS.  Despite the issues I have been left with, my quality of life today is head and shoulders above the quality of life I had before my surgery.  Before VSG I had uncontrolled insulin resistant diabetes.  I self injected insulin as mach as 5 times day, my eyes sight was dwindling because of the uncontrolled blood sugars, I had severe sleep apnea, severe mobility issues such that I had to retire from bedside nursing (I am a trauma nurse) simply because I could not longer physically do the job.  Today I am active, with boundless energy, off CPAP, off insulin. . .in fact off most of my meds.

In Summary this surgery is the best thing I ever did for myself period!

Reader's Digest Version of what a VSG(Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) is. . .It is a surgical weight loss procedure that works by restriction only.  The greater curvature of your stomach is removed leaving anywhere from 10-40% of your stomach.  Both valves are also left.  There is no rerouting of the small intestine and therefore no mal-absorption component.  Weight loss results are about the same however take longer to achieve.  GERD is a big issue post-op, and can resolve once there is significant weight loss, however, when a smaller sleeve is left it can become a chronic problem.   PPI's and H2 inhibitors help however, prohibits the use of Iron Salts.  Another big issue is B12 absorption because with the loss of the greater curvature of the stomach comes the loss of the excretion surface for intrinsic factor required to digest and absorb bound B12.

Unfortunately VSG is not by patient choice in Ontario, there are criteria to qualify, some centres and surgeons apply then much more loosely than others.

I am sure many out there can contribute to this post as it is not the complete "wikipedia" version
