I'm a bit of a lurker, but have some interesting news & surgery date TWH
Talking with Kristine at windsor, it is their WISH list to eventually have plastic surgeons as part of the "team". They also would like to get OHIP to fund taking care of those of us who went OCC. for that to happen there would have to be a lot of changes including funding, surgeons willing to work withOHIP payments etc.

Thanks or your post. Congratulations on getting your surgery date and best wishes on your journey!
I had an education class in Ottawa last week and the same thing was alluded to with respect to skin removal... something is "in the works" and it sounds lke the expectation is that it will be in place within a couple of years...and may be connected to the weight clinic. I don't see any harm in sharing what you've been told... all speculation at this point but still..

Dr. Jackson is married to a woman. One of my nurses when I was in hospital mentioned how nice he was and how she went to a bariatric convention with him and his wife and that they took a whole bunch of people out to dinner. He is an awesome surgeon and has an excellent bedside manner. I am so happy that he did my surgery.
I'm embarrassed to say that I never even heard of candy cane syndrome, even though I did lots of research pre-op. I'll google that just to get in the know. Wonderful to hear that the program stats at TWH just keep getting better. I'm assuming that they still have had no deaths in their program? That's how it was when I had my surgery in January of this year.
I think many will rejoice if plastic sugery becomes OHIP covered. I was a lightweight with only 100 lbs to lose, so my excess skin isn't that bad. Unsightly, sure, but not producing any rashes or creating any medical problems at all. I think I just have to learn to live with it and love it as part of my journey. In some ways, its a good reminder that I never want to fill out that skin with fat again.
Congrats on getting a surgery date. Its a totally freakin crazy ride.....one that you can't really be prepared for in advance no matter how much research and soul searching you've done pre-op. Wishing you lots of success!

Congrats on your posting and on your upcoming surgery. Your surgery date happens to be my birthdate , so it will be a very important day for you as many here consider their surgery date as a kind of 'new' birthdate to celebrate.
Thank you for your info re the plastic surgery possibilities. Never say never right? I feel that we do pay so many taxes on simply everything and that OHIP is our right and yes we are so fortunate to live in Canada. It is in the best interests of not just the patient but the whole medical community to make bariatric surgery more available and in our own centres anot to have to travel out of country (p.s. I hate the advertising on this site btw).
We are all hoping for the best result but also we have to be realistic in our 'next life' and some here have posted about their skin looking 'deflated'. Well I for one am on this bandwagon to become 'deflated' too. The goals that members post here are uplifting and realistic. Was told in the first info class that there is a huge difference between plastic surgery for a panni and a general surgeon removing excess skin. The plastic surgery is much more of a tummy tuck with the muscles being tightened and a better job with the incision, etc.
Good luck and best wishes,
Nancy

I too am glad that you posted and shared what you learned from your surgeon. So happy for you that you have a date. I can hardly wait to get mine.
I agree that we pay lots of taxes and are entitled to medical coverage. In no way do I ever feel like I'm taking advantage of the gov't. I think it would be awesome if some or all the plastic surgery needed following bariatric surgery would be covered. I can imagine how it could depress some people after working so hard to lose the weight.
Again, thanks for sharing the info.

A friend of mine had her one year appointment in Ottawa and said that Ottawa now was a plastic surgeon as part of their team. For a fee of $100.00 he will tell you what you qualify for through OHIP and help you through the process.
Perhaps there is something to what Dr Jackson is saying when he says that OHIP may be changing their tight grip on what they are covering in regards to skin removal.

In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.
