Just wondering which surgery most of you have had. I'm reading pros and cons for both gastric bypass and gastric sleeve. Also wondering how long I can expect to take off work due to surgery?

I am having rny...its the gold standard...you have to request and sometimes fight for the others....most people seem to be back to work after about two weeks....

I had RNY Sept. 2011. To answer your question about time off work, it depends on what kind of work you do. You be off possible 4-6 weeks. Best to check with your doctor. Everyone's recovery is different. Best of luck to you.

I had the VSG and love it.  I was back to work in a week.  One of my pros could be someone else's con.  With the VSG, you don't dump.  Some people like the reinforcement that it gives you to not eat anything too fatty or sweet.  I didn't feel that I needed that.

Best wishes with whatever you choose.

There is a third option as well, called Duodenal Switch or DS. A kick - a$$ surgery that is mostly malabsorptive and this effect is permanent. Statistically produces highest weight loss, but require intensive supplementation. In Ontario it is recommended for high BMI, but can be performed on anyone. Requires serious fight for approval.

No dumping, high protein and high-moderate fat diet - very easy to follow, best statistics in diabetes resolution.

I had this surgery and LOVE it.

I took almost four weeks off for my surgery (office/computer job), but I had an open procedure, it heals longer. Lap patients rarely require more than two weeks, providing no complications occur.

Good luck researching your options!

Nata, a very happy DSer!

Oh, boy.....I started a thread about the Sleeve vs the RNY. I should have come to this post first. OPPS!

Wow! 2 weeks off work? That would be amazing!

No I think it was brilliant

I don't think the RnY is a "gold standard" just because OHIP inflicts it on everyone. That's not a valid reason to have it.

It's short term effective...long term..

let's wait and see

I had the RNY.  I took 4 weeks of sick leave off (medical certificate from hospital), and then 4 weeks of vacation leave.  I felt most comfortable this way as I had time to rest in the afternoon, get used to the different eating patterns, ensuring liquids, vitamins, etc.  When I went back to work, it was easy as I was on the diet for life, wasn't tired, and prepared my food ahead of time.
