Confused on eating post surgery?!

I felt the same way as you did pre surgery. But honestly it is maybe a little bit too judgmental of you to have an opinion on it. For example I was on opti for three weeks then full liquids for I think I last 12 days instead of the 14 prescribed before I switched to err.. mostly stuff on the purreed diet but I never purreed things was just very careful about chewing. and Now I am on soft foods and slowly eating things. To be honest I have eaten a couple things that are not allowed on the diet but only in social unavoidable situations and always just focusing on protein and of course only maybe 3 oz of food max since I can not eat any more than that.
At this stage the main focus is on protein and there isnt really any room for anything other than that. Just got home from my 1 month post op meeting.
Riley,
I am not being "judgmental" as you state....I am simply asking a question as what I am reading is going against what I'm being groomed to "believe" in classes etc.
I also think that yes in some classes some people may "cheat" and in some people will not cheat at all and stick to this plan to tee. It will depend on the person and their will-power.
As I have stated my own dad and sister in low both cheated and cheated on Opti as well, so im not uneducated in the things surrounding RNY.
I do apologize if you took my comments as me being judgemental but I was only asking....
I did not even see Chenelle post about eating pickles 2 1/2 weeks out and she commented helping clear up anything with out issue. But I also appreciate your feedback!
Congrats on your 1-month post-op!
Sorry I didnt mean you were being rude or anything I just think that maybe until you are there yourself you might want to relax a little bit on it, for example if you have something that you shouldnt have or if something happens know that it isnt a huge deal. Yes you should try to follow the diet guide as much as possible post op, but if something happens just try to make better choices and not be too hard on yourself. Everyone heals and reacts differently.. if at 12 days post op on christmas morning I had not tolerated that poached egg well I would have gone back to full fluids.. 5 weeks of protein shakes/ full fluids is a long time

It's important to follow the rules when you are healing, like don't jump ahead to pureed too soon unless you are told to do so. Once you are on solids, the only rule is protein first. There is no such thing as cheating once you are on diet for life so not sure if you mean then or if you mean during the healing stages. No food is taboo post op once healed.
Different centers and Dr have different rules about when you can eat some things. I would stick to the plan of your center since if you have a issue that is who you will need to see. Not all have the 2 week at each stage food plan. They don't all agree even on caffeine. I follow the rules for the most part because if I find out i can eat that food I might. One time can lead to another.

precisely my thoughts.
Thanks onmom
They are guidelines, but most important in the first month when your pouch is healing. After that, you have to live in your body. Textures really depend, but supplements are VIP.
My body changed a lot post surgery, ie I can't tolerate wheat or eggs anymore and I can't eat almost all types of meat (in soup OK, or ground beef with lots of mashed potatoes but otherwise no). I can't eat chicken which blows my mind also.
Some people dump. Some people have more constipation and need more fiber, which usually comes with carbs. Some people become very carbo-phobic, or anti-fat, or anti-sugar. I try to remember that it's not the food, it's the eater. Some fries won't kill you. Fries every day will.
You have to live in your body, some people need more crunch (pickle), etc. You have to find a balance that works for you.
The appointments post op, where they check your vitamin levels, are definitely something to watch and to work with.
My family doctor is great and I feel very comfortable asking for a follow up on my iron (for example) to see if my supplement regime is working.

My best suggestion: Follow your centre's plan to a "T". Just because you CAN eat something doesn't mean you SHOULD. You will find the most successful people on this forum stuck to their eating plans entirely. I don't give much credit to those people telling you to "try things out and see what happens". That, in my NOT so humble opinion, is poor, ****ty, unthoughtful advice.
If you have further questions, I would be very happy to help you out.

Karen is bang on here.......
I just had a scope at almost 4 years out.....my pouch and stoma are in great shape......you dont want to stretch your stoma.....and you don't want to endanger your health or success with this program
The problem is....you DON'T find out you shouldn't have done something until it is too late......and I am not just talking about an immediate problem such as dumping/vomitting or the foamies......I would be more concerned about the damage it does to me long term....both physically and mentally....and dont discount the mental aspect of trying something....thinking it is OK...and the mindset that follows this
My rant here is not for the original poster....just in general....and in agreement with what Karen had indicated.......last chance saloon folks......what do you want to do with YOUR last chance?
