Not Fat Enough?

I go for my orientation on Monday and I'm worried they're going to tell me I'm not fat enough for surgery.  I'm borderline 40 BMI.  I don't really have any other health issues besides feeling like crap all the time and being in pain a lot because my joints don't like all this extra weight.  I see that everyone goes on Optifast before surgery and loses weight.  If I lost some weight before surgery I would be under 40 BMI.  I had weight loss surgery back in 2001 and am looking to have a revision done as I have regained all the weight.  On the day of surgery back then, I was 10-15 ponds less then I am now.  Obviously they have changed the requirements for surgery.  I'm really worried they will deny me.  Just looking for some reassurance I guess.

Hey there I went through Guelph I had no co-morbidities and was considered a "light weight " anyway I went through a lap band surgery that was unsuccessful and after three revisions I threatened to sue and they removed the band and refunded the money thank god !

i then applied for the gastric bypass through referral blah blah blah you know the rest .... Anyway I don't know all your history but if you fight for what you want you will get what you want and I believe in you !!!!

i wish you success and hope you get the surgery you want ,

*hugs*

I have to tell you I ate a lot to make sure I wa****ting that 40 bmi criteria before surgery. It turned out I had comorbidities that probably would have gotten me in anyway. However, I don't regret doing what I did. I've been up and down my whole life. I wasn't going to let 20 lbs get in my way.

I am borderline as well, with no other health issues. When I had my orientation a few months ago, I asked that question ...what happens if by the time my appt with the RN comes and I am below 40 BMI and the nurse at the session said they look also will look at my previous history with losing weight etc. It is my understanding ( from what I have read here) they base a lot on what you weigh at the orientation.

I have been consious of it though and haven't gained any more weight, but certainly haven't lost much either, just so I can stay on the cusp.

Good luck!

Too funny!  LMAO.  I was thinking of wearing a weight belt or ankle weights :)

I totally support that! My surgeon said the surgery is for people who ARE able to lose weight...but not keep it off. And I asked him if I lost weight between then and my surgery date would I be kicked out. He said he would love it if I lost weight cause it would make his job easier!
Just get past the Diet/Nut. (Tip -Say yes to their every instruction!) And you're GOLDEN!

Yes, also, drink fluids (water) before weigh in.  16 oz = 1 lb.

And keep your mouth shut.   They don;t necessarily know if you have co=morbidities without reviewing your file and news flash, people are lazy.

*keels over in a fit of giggles*

I've already admitted this to a few others so saying it here should be cool...

I wanted my surgeon to be happy with my pre-op diet loss (as I was not doing opti due to allergies)... So when I went for my PATT's which was before the pre-op diet because of the xmas holidays I drank 5 cups of water right before going in.

The giggle on top of the added water weight is... I had to pee soooo badly and have public washroom issues so I waited till I left and was INCREDIBLY thankful to be out within 2 hours.

Thanks for the info.  I'm thinking I need to pig out this weekend just to be sure.  That sounds awful and counter productive but I really believe I need this surgery to get my life going on the path I want it to be on.  I lost my Mother four years ago and it's been a roller coaster ride.  After her sudden death I realized that life is short and we can all be gone in a heartbeat.  I want whatever time I have left on this earth to be healthy, happy, and strong.

Thank you to everyone on this forum.  You are an incredible bunch and so supportive of each other.  Though I've only been on here for a short time, I feel like I know a lot of you personally.  You are all truly inspirational :)
