Are protein shakes good for you? An article to read and think about.

I am sure there are millions of articles out there to argue either side of the issue, but I happened to read this blog article about protein shakes, and it made me reconsider my view on them.  I will do more research, of course, but here it is:  http://www.naturallyintense.net/blog/diet/nutrition/are-prot ein-shakes-bad-for-you-and-do-they-work/

It's worth a read IMO.  Lately I have been using a lot of protein shakes to try and take eating out of the equation, to try to get back on track and in control.  I have also started to get pretty bad headaches.  Hmmm...  I know it is important to derive your nutrients from fresh food as much as possible, but maybe its an even bigger necessity than I have considered it to be in the past.

What is your personal opinion on using protein shakes?  Does anyone have a particular recipe for a shake that totals 15-20 grams of protein, but uses only uses natural ingredients?

Working on regain, I've found that starting with a protein shake every morning (or protein coffee) has been really important for me. I'm bust in the
Morning and usually my morning meal is on the go. If I don't have a shake, it tends to be something not so
Protein focused. I love starting my day with a shake.

Best of all, I like my shakes as is, so I don't need to add any unnecessary carbs like bananas or peanut butter so my protein shakes Stay protein focused. I really find that high protein, low carbs is the key for me to get regain off. I don't think I would do as well without them.

I agree about using the protein shakes to get back on track.  It works for me too.  I have been mixing a Glucerna, with a scoop of protein powder, and a either ice, or a half cup of frozen blueberries.  I use the glucerna because it is sugar free, and has a ton of essential vitamins in it, which the protein powder does not.  I feel like if I am going to supplement a meal, it should give me some of the nutrients I am missing from regular food.  I have 1 of these for breakfast, one for lunch, and then an appropriate dinner.  I may have 1 snack throughout the day.  I just find that sometimes, I need to take eating off the table.  Then I can get control and refocus.  Sounds drastic as I write it down, but works for me in terms of breaking bad habits.

For me, low carbs is key. I believe that glucerna has way too many carbs for me. If I have too many carbs along with protein, I tend not to lose but if it works for you, that's good.

HOLY CARBOHYDRATES BATMAN!!  I never counted carbs through my rapid weightloss stage, so it is not instinct for me look at them on the nut label- especially for things that are less obviously carb-based, like bread or pasta. But you are completely right.  There are 27 carbs in each shakes,  a that's a lot.  I'd probably fight a better battle with something less carb heavy.

500 ml of milk has 18. A small Greek yogurt has 8. So even 250 ml of milk, add 100 gr of yogurt any fruit and you have a decent amount of protein

I am through the Guelph clinic and they are adamant to stay away from protein shakes. They want us to get protein from food sources. The only time they will suggest protein shakes is if you can't tolerate many of the food groups and thus this is the only way you can get protein.    They have stressed this through our education

I think all protein powders and shakes are not created equal. If you are healthy and working out and using some of the mainstream shakes, powders and bars there is a lot of sugar and carb in them. You might as well be drinking sugar. But there are some better ones out there. I bought Lean fit from costco. Very big waste of money because it has way too much artificial sweetener in it. I usually buy maximus Whey but it has been out of stock . It has no artificial sweeteners and only 7 carbs. It has the added bonus of being Canadian and tastes good

I agree not all protein shakes are not created equal.  I have a protein shake every morning and mornings are too rushed for me to have anything else.  I would rather have a protein shake in the morning rather than nothing.  My dietitian at St Joe's is fine with me having a protein shake every morning.  I find if I have something high in carbs in the morning I crave carbs all day.  I use to use Premier from Costco, but found I grew tired of it quickly.  I have 4ever Fit Natural protein shakes, they come in a variety of flavours, but I tend to stay with the fruit flavours as I prefer them as they remind me of a smoothie. The are very low in carbs 0-3 grams of carbs per scoop and 20-23 grams of protein per scoop.  I have been drinking them for over a year and have been happy with it.
