This is a tricky question because I think there is lots of misinformation out there. Diet pop is related to weight gain post-op but I'm not convinced it's the carbonation.

I completed avoided anything carbonated for 7 full months. I have had some since, but make a point of not drinking pop since I was such a pop addict pre-op. It's a bad idea early out because it might cause you pain, but once you're healed I don't really see what the carbonation can do to you. All the other junk in pop I can see, but straight up carbonated mineral water? I don't get it.

I love the bubbles too

Apparently it's the sweetener in diet pops that contribute to weight gain. Not sure why but I've read that a few times.

Carbonation is basically made of sodium which will cause weight gain. I was under the impression that we were to never have carboned beverages post op---pretty sure that was discussed at orientation as well as in post op class. I thought it had to do with the potential for developing ulcers?

Carbonation leaches the calcium from your bones that is why they don't want us having it.

No - phosphoric acid leeches calcium from bones. It is in cola. It's not even in non-dark sodas (i.e. your Sprites and whatnot)

During my Nut classes and the Orientation at TWH the reason we were given to avoid - for post-op life - was that the carbonation can contribute to stretching the pouch.  I think I have had enough tummy stretching!

Is it the taste of Perrier or the bubbles? Need to avoid the bubble but in time... a long time....I my attempt flat diet pop if anything.

I've always drank Perrier on and off. Getting bored with plain water. Don't drink pop and don't like any of the crystal lite type drinks. I need to get more fluids in and mineral water is something I really like. I'll ask my doctor when I see him in a few weeks.

Tell you right now, the answer will be "no". Not sure what is so hard about "no". Kind of like "can't I have just a few cigarettes?" No!

ALL of the literature is very specific about "carbonated" drinks. It doesn't say "soda" or "sparkling water" it says carbonated.

Drink water, it's what you are supposed to have, without bubbles, or you will get dehydrated and sick. Try Mio, or a lemon wedge.
