Eating enough?

Hi all,
Had my RNY done this past Thursday. Am home now, in pain but manageable, only taking 1 perc every 4 hours.
Today I switched from the clear fluids to the full liquid 2 week. So far I have had a quarter cup of oatmeal with 1/4 cup of milk and couldn't fini**** I also had a small no sugar added pudding cup, and have been sipping my water. I had about 1/3 cup of a protein shake but it seems like a lot. Is this normal? Do I need to build up? I feel like the sample menu they gave me is more than I am actually having but I don't know that I want more so I am trying to figure out what is normal and how much to push myself.
Also, I can't find yogurt that specifically says "no sugar added". Is source yogurt ok?
Any words of wisdom from those who have been there? I don't want to screw up by not eating enough but I don't want to push myself if I don't need to!!!!
Thanks
Robyn

Hey Robyn, welcome to the bench!

I am only 2+ weeks out nd know exactly how you feel.  My first meal was oatmeal too ad could only get a few spoonfuls in.  Yes, you will tolerate a tiny bit more each time but making sure you measure to ensure you don't over fill.

In a few days you will be able to have more.  My first few t was all I could do to get my vits and protein. Each day is better.

Regarding the yogurt, I bought source Greek vanilla and lemon flavours. Yum!  They were flavoured with sweetener.  I bought fruit ones too but don't get them yet as they have seeds and bits of fruit and seeds.

Breathe, one step at a time.

How long were you on pain killers?

They were my concern too as of course I didn't want to become needy and because they cause constipation.

I only took one at a time, tops three a day for the first few days. Then took 3/4 then 1/2 as needed.  At about 8/9 days I only tools t night as I found I was not able to rest well.  The past few days I have not needed any and have several at well.

Honestly, breathe, one day at a time.  Sip sip sip and you will be fine. Gas pains will pass, you will get stronger and getting out of bed will be easier - that was the worse for me and sleeping comfortably.

Besides being a fraction of its old size, your pouch is swollen and your body is just adjusting to the new plumbing and wiring.  I wouldn't push anything, just reread the stuff they sent you home with and relax.  drink as much water as you can, move as much as you can and you will make your new "normal" by going slowly and listening to your body (I can honestly say its the first time I listened to my body post RNY).  Heal well!

I buy the Source Greek Yogurt Vanilla Yogurt-50 calories.  It says no sugar added and I believe it is fat free.  It is my favourite and I eat it plain or add it to my protein shake in the morning.  Congrats and welcome to the bench!

Stop the painkillers as soon as you can. You don't want to deal with the constipation. Try extra strength tylenol. You'll do fine without the buzz.

I can't seem to get as much in as I would like either. Takes time. Make sure you get enough fluids.

It sounds all normal to me.  I could get maybe a runny tablespoon of oatmeal in for the first while.  It will get easier and don't pu**** concentrate on protein and your water and vits  As far as the pain pills, everyone is different, I was taking it for 5 days, I tried to be brave and ended up in a fetal position on the bed, not good, you can't walk and think in that much pain.  But constipation is a real pain in the butt, so have a back up plan.

All the best and speedy healing.

I am not able to eat as much as is recommended either. I agree with the others, try Tylenol instead of percs, you may be fine without the narcotic. Don't push yourself but make sure you get in your protein and skip the pudding, nothing you need is in that anyway, right now your priority needs to be protein, with shakes and yoghurt. Source one is excellent and I found at Costco they have a Kirkland brand plain Greek yoghurt which is at free and sf and the taste is amazing. I also use something called my fitness pal, its an ap that lets you log all your foods, you will see exactly what your eating and what you need by using this.

Its a lot to get used to that's for sure, but we are all here to help. enlightened
