Soup vs drinking with meal??

How come it is ok to eat soup with stuff in it but not to drink with a meal?  I wondered this today as I ate my soup at lunch.  Isn't it the same thing?  Food and liquid?  Or am I missing something?

Can't speak for others but I drink the broth then eat the stuff in it.  Same goes for cereal, wet it with milk, drink the milk, eat the cereal then you don't mix the two together.

Hi Zizzler, I have wondered the exact same thing!! I love drinking with my meals but as I am getting close to getting a surgery date I have been practicing not having any drinks with my meals but I have been thinking the exact same thing and I look forward to see what other post op people say! Thanks for starting the conversation.

Soup is ok when you are on liquids post op but not a great choice. Remember always protein first. Not a lot in soup. I will eat my protein first then veg. If you have space after then go for soup. The reason you don't mix liquids with food is that drink will cause your pouch to empty faster leading you to eat more. A sip or 2 while eating is ok if the food is dry and hard to swallow but don't get in the habit.

Its because if u drink while u eat it fills u up faster and u wont get in as much food as u should also it might cause the food to slide threw your pouch and you wont absorb any of the good stuff from the food

So soup is actually a slider food?  So many are eating it I thought it was recommended.  I have seen people adding protein powder to it too.  Would it then be ok?

Google, no drinking with meals wls. There is a great YouTube on why we shouldn't drink that demonstrates why. All the replies above are great, but for me I found this visual helped me SEE why.

Excellent question! Now, I never drink just before, and especially 30 mins after I eat.

Great video - than you, the visual really does help.  So what I am understanding is that soup is not good after the liquid/puree stage.  Does that sound about right?  What about if it is a thick soup similar to the applesauce? Hmmm...

Yes, I was told soups are ok, but only if it has substance, or thick cream like. I don't eat soups a lot now, chilli, beans is my choice these days for protein really.

I am sure there are great soups out there though. angry

Very interesting, thank you.  I am learning every day with this forum.  I have my orientation on Friday so I will probably get more info then too.
