I went camping with my husband at Whitefish Lake in Algonquin. Hugh's best man (and best friend), his wife, children and grandchildren - along with all of their friends in group camping. We had a terrific time.

It was a beautiful day on Saturday. Bill asked if I wanted to go canoeing (along with three of his grandchildren and the two dogs). I hesitated. It had been more than 25 years. I worried about my shoulder that I had surgery on 18 months ago, and I worried about being able to do it.

I got changed into my shorts and old running shoes, walked down to the lake with the kids and dogs, got them into their life jackets, then put on on myself. IT FIT. It was not tight and it just zipped up. I helped Bill get the kids into the bottom of the canoe, got in the front UNASSISTED and sat down on the little seat with ROOM TO SPARE. We canoed for about an hour and the only trouble I had was my shoulder when I paddled on the left side. I wasn't winded and I felt terrific.

I got back to the camp site, found my husband, gave him a big hug and started to cry. I found the courage to just do it and all the obstacles just fell away. I can't wait to go back on the water again with my own family and am sorry that I had allowed myself to miss what I so enjoyed.

Life is good. God is good. And I am thankful.

I love this update so much. I can only imagine how great that felt. Two summers ago I went camping with my family and we went on a canoe ride. They didn't have a vest big enough for me and I had to squeeze in. I was so uncomfortable and embarrassed. I wanted to cry but I couldn't let my kids down.

SO Happy for you!

That is so great!!! One of that main reasons I did this surgery is so I can participate, not sit on the sidelines anymore. I love love your story and totally get how emotional it must have been.

Congratulations. You're living your life!! Amazing. Well deserved.

Oh, Linda! That's so wonderful. This post really resonates with me. My family are all canoe campers and I haven't been able to take my son and it's really bothered me a lot. I am hopeful that this will be the summer. Congrats on pushing yourself and reaping the rewards!! Such a great feeling!
