Update - atrial fibrillation

Well as expected my tachycardia that I have had for more than 30 years has become worse and I am now on dilteazem - a channel blocker.  This will not slow down the progress.  I will be on this for the rest of my life.  The good news - I will have a rest of my life and I don't say that lightly.  For those who don't know - A. Fib leads to what we call the feeling of a panic attack but it's really a racing heart to try to get into a good beat.  After all these years I apparently don't have rhythm!  Who knew.  Anyway - when my heart struggles (and sometimes fails) to get into rhythm - I could start throwing clots then that can lead to stroke.  Which also runs in my family.

This process - getting through the tests for the bypass has SAVED MY LIFE!  If I had not gone to the sleep study I would have go on thinking I was just tired and I had a funky beat in my heart.  I now know my heart actually stops at night and at what I thought was rest could get up to 161 beats to as low as 40 without meditation.

I was asked to be in a study - gastric bypass and the long term effects on type 2 diabetes.  I am not a diabetic - but have a strong family history.  The bad news - I have to change my diet so my metabolic state changes.  I am not happy with this diet - I feel like I am falling back into my old ways.  Today was the first of just 5 days and I am already feeling heartburn and stomach pains.

Next week I will be placed on an IV for 6 hours for a glucose test with hourly draws.  Then the next day I will have to swallow ensure for 4 hours (yum).  This is hell for me.  I had lost 15 pounds from my 1000 cal diet for the last 6 weeks and now I have to add back bread and some fats.  I was kicking butt here.  But it's for a good cause and I can go back to my strict post surgery diet the last week before surgery.

I can't believe I am this close - 2 weeks!

Thanks for reading

Mary, congratulations on your upcoming new life. It won't be long now.

I just want to thank you for posting this tonight. Monday our nephew was talking to me about his heart racing...and he suffers from panic attacks too. I just called him and read part of your post to him. I told him to go to a doctor. He is only 30 years old and has 2 kids. I am concerned and he is stubborn too so I only hope that he goes to one. He told me that he is afraid that if he goes there will be something bad told to him but I told him that if there is that the doctor is going to be able to help him where if he doesn't there isn't going to be anything able to be done. Without you posting this I would have never known to call David with this information. Thanks again.

Good luck and prayers are being said for your upcoming surgery.

Good luck to you! Information is power! I know it's tough going back to your former diet, but it's only for a week, and you may help other people.

I have a friend who suffers from abnormal rhythms and has had several heart ablations because of this; also has had to be on blood thinners and other heart meds. It's a very serious thing. Yes, a lot of stuff is found out while going through the testing for gastric bypass that can save your life. Other people can also attest to this. Many have learned they had heart problems; others learned they had sleep apnea. (I have mild sleep apnea, but not caused by my obesity ... in fact, I still have it. It's caused by my anatomy.)

Happy this helped.  A bit more

when I was 20 I thought it was panic attacks - nothing to fear they came and went wihout much ado.
When I was in my 30s they said it was pari-menopause
In my 40 - menapause
After hystrectormy - you got - post menapause.
I always knew my heart skipped a beat.  But over time - the skip became more and more prolonged then more often.  I recall sleeping and waking to my heart racing - I thought - wow - that must have been a great dream!  So when my heart would race I figured - I just did a little work-out.  Indeed.
It never goes away - even after the surgery.  This is probably in the family - I know it's on my father's side.
what you don't want is the never ending panic attack and of course stroke.  Many Many Many people have this condition.  It is treatable but not curable (yet)

Mine is agrevated by the sleep apnea (which should go away in about 50 pounds) and the weight.
a life time of meds is better than a shortened life - that could have been preventable.
Your son is in his 30s - most probably don't notice or care about this until they hit late 40s or 50s and well - we see our family start to leave us.  When my mom passed last year all I could think about was what am I doing for the rest of my life.  She was 80 and I would be there in 31 years.  Not long

BYW - the heart was really diagnosed while on the sleep study.  That really gave a good picture due to the time frame.  I had a stress test and angio 9 years ago but the sleep study sealed the deal.  Nothing like being told 'your heart went into a. Fib and stopped last night' to put things in order.

So my journey began to live well until I am called home

Peace. Surgery Date - 9/26/09
