Osteoporosis Pre-wls?
Revision on 08/21/12
Has anyone out there bee diagnosed with osteoporosis before having WLS?Specifically, RNY? How have you done? It seems that among my options is RNY, but even though my surgeon indicated I could supplement and be fine, I have concerns. I've read studies about the incidence of osteoporosis AFTER RNY but with what I am trying to discover. Also, these studies were not using information based on current procedures being used, but earlier RNY protocols.
I may have a way to bump up surg. date from the July one I was anticipating but I have to make a final decision about what type to have.
Thank you in advance,
Sue

Hi Sue, Welcome to OFF! Yes, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis about 3 yrs prior to my RNY. I've was on Fosamax with D prior to RNY, took about 3 weeks off the med, then resumed fosamax just as before. I get bone density once a year & see continued improvement (not much, but it is getting better). Of course, I also take 1500 mg of Calcium, Lots of Vitamin D and Magnesium supplements and a multi purpose vitamin. My surgeon had no problem with it. The reason I stayed off it a few weeks is that I couldn't drink a full 8 oz all at once and didn't want to risk upsetting my stomach. Losing weight and a more active lifestyle is a definite plus for those with osteoporosis. good luck to you!

Thank you so much. I appreciate your reply, and I am glad you are doing so well. I couldn't handle Fosomax or others like it, so I am on Evista, large doses of D every week, and of course a multi and lots of calcium. I had forgotten about adding magnesium, but I will get some.
Thank you, again

Dear GrannyMedic 1:
I might add that I am one year out from having the VSG. I no longer need Cpap.
My hypertension meds have been decreased. I can breathe much better and
I have increased stamina.
I am a 5'2'. My surgery weight was 242. I am now 150 and still losing. I am
hypothyroid taking levothyroid. I feel that I must be able to absorb all my thyroid
meds as well as my B12. So personally, I did not want a malabsortive procedure.
My concern for those who are early in this process is that they are aware that
there are other options besides the RNY and the Band.
Good luck on your journey.

Thank you. I desperately wanted a vsg, but BC/BS is adament they will not cover it for me with a BMI of 35. It would be the perfect solution for me, I think, but I am not able to consider self-pay, so I will have to give in on that one. Due to serious financial concerns I am going with a band, Should I need another proceedure at a later time perhaps the ins. company will have come to their senses.
I appreciate your response.
