My dog died tonight.

I know you've heard about my Darla... she started having seizures tonight and after an hour nonstop we raced her to an all night vet for euthanasia. We knew she was dying but she was suffering and scared. She was almost gone by the time we got there. Oh- I'm so sad. I loved her so much. She died on almost the same day that she joined our family 15 years ago. She was a birthday gift for my daughter, who turned 25 today. She doesn't know yet. I just feel sick. Thanks for listening. I'm trying to calm down and this is helping.

This is one of those situations where a lot of people will tell you they know how you feel.  And you will think "No you don't, you don't know how special Darla was to me."  It is so sad when our pets die.  I keep telling my wife that is the biggest drawback to getting a dog.  Chances are you will get attached and outlive it.

Let me pass on this story to you.  I am sure you have seen it, but it is special to all pet owners.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!

Hi,

I am so sorry you have lost your family pet. I have been there too.  Someone who is not a dog lover could never understand the feelings we have for our heart dogs. There are no real words to comfort you and your family.  You will grieve in your own way.  I love animals and as George said, the hardest part is knowing some day they will die.  Breaking are hearts.

I hope your daughter will be ok.  I know we suffer with the decision of putting them down and keeping them around for as long as we can.  But, you did the right thing.  You would not want to see your best friend suffer.  They are innocent and can not talk or tell us where it hurts.  Out of love, we make that decision for them.

I will be thinking about you and your family.  Write about Darla here and let us know what happiness she brought into your lives.  It will make you feel good.

Peace
Mary

I am on my way.  What a ride it has been.

Julia, My heart aches for you. Pets have a special place in our families. I am sure many of your memories of Darla extend to include family times with your daughter as she was growing up. It hurts so much to lose them, but our lives would be so much less had we not had them with us. May she rest in peace. I knwo she'll always have that special little corner of your heart.

Julia,

I'm so sorry you lost your dear Darla.  Our pets are our family.  (((HUGS)))  We lost our dog a year ago at Christmas, she was almost 14.  Hope your heavy heart feels better soon.

Some people might not support my WLS decision.
Those people remind me of slinkys. Not good for much but it would would bring a smile to my face if someone pushed them down the stairs.

Julia,
Hugs my friend....great big hugs, it hurts so much when are fur-babies pass on to the Rainbow Edge. Your Darla is happy now running around, pain free and just waiting for you to be together again one day.

I have many fur-babies waiting for me. You just go ahead and cry and be sad...for just a little while. Then take a deep breath, look around and see the signs of the living springing up around you, the flowers, tiny babies and yes...more fur babies. When the time comes for you, there will be another fur baby...when you are ready. Hugs-Debbie
