RNYers...
I'm hopefully having an RNY later this month (still waiting for insurance approval). I'm wondering what particular challenges may face those of us over 50? I'm 57 with some health conditions, which is the main reason I am doing this, the other reason is to improve overall quality of life as I age. I'm just wondering if there is anything I should be mindful about. I didn't know this forum existed until someone told me only moments ago. Nice to find it! Thanks.
I had my surgery September 15, 2009 at the age of 54. ( I turn 56 on Thursday). I did my surgery to avoid health issues that plague my family. On my mother's side, it's diabetes and heart. On my father's, it's blood pressure, chelostrial, and kidney. And I have sleep apnea. I was lucky enough to escape everything else.
I do have a couple of suggestions for you. Remember,, we're not 20 years old anymore. Our bodies might need a little extra time to heal. So, please take it a little easy on yourself. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask your surgeon and the nurses. That's what they're there for.
And the most important, if you think something is wrong, don't be afraid to say something. You know your body better than anybody.

I was 49 when I had my surgery, but now I'm in my 50s and yes, there are challenges. You're probably going (or have gone) through menopause. Your hormones are changing ... that makes weight loss more difficult. You will lose more slowly than a younger person (or a man), so don't be discouraged. It took me three years to lose my weight. Exercise may be difficult if you have arthritis or other mobility challenges (I sure know that).
I had my surgery because I had back arthritis and knee arthritis, plus fibromyalgia. The arthritis was better after the weight came off but it's progressive, so it doesn't go away. My knee is actually worse since I had my replacement. I did get off my blood pressure meds. I regained a half inch in height as the disc compression abated.

Just pay attention to your body and health. You know your body better than anyone else. By this time you know all the rules and just because we are older really we are just like the young ones. Rules are rules. Follow what your bariatric doctor says always.

Hello and welcome to OFF!!
I have nothing bad to say about having my RNY. It improved my life in so many ways. I only wish I would have done it soon.
No particular challenges because of age. I feel 40 again!!
However, I will say maintenance is harder then the losing!! I regained 20 pounds....I have once again lost 10 and working on the other 10. I know my doctor said it is normal to regain 10-15% of your weight.....I don't want to go there!!
I wish you the very best...good luck and I hope you continue to stay here with us!!
Hugs....connie d

Congratulations Joyce!
I had RNY 3 years ago at 56 and my only regret is that I couldn't have done this when I was 30!
All the best to you for health and happiness.

Dear Joyce,
Judy G. from Waltham, MA here. I had my RnY in 2008 at age 61. The driving concern for me was a 15 yr history of type 2 diabetes. I did not think I would live to see age 70. I was obese and had metabolic syndrome and was depressed. Within days of the surgery, my sugars normalized and I have not needed diabetes meds since. I did have some gall bladder problems [which started pre-2008] and wound up having my gall bladder removed in 2009.
I am now nearing my 64th birthday and feel like I have been given a new lease on life. I fully expect to live 70 and well beyond. In fact, I will be mighty annoyed if I don't ! I exercise now and of course eat completely differently than I used to. I have found a high protein, low-glycemic index diet is best for my particular body chemistry and do not worry to much about eating fats, since those were never a big problem for me.
But most wonderful of all is my feeling that every day is a miracle. I have been given a new life. Whatever time I have ahead of me will be filled with gratitude and joy, because why live any other way? I am not happy at my present job and am thinking long and hard about what the next ste******ce I am close to retirement age. But there is no stress in the situation [okay, maybe some!]. I feel serene. Not that there are no problems in my life, but I can approach them from a centered, serene place inside me.
I pray that all goes well with your procedure and that you have a rapid and uneventful recovery. You are starting a remarkable journey. Be open to everything that comes your way; be aware of change inside and out, and ask for help if you need it.
God bless!
Judy G.

Joyce, I was also 57 when I had my surgery on November 17, 2009. My one and only regret is I didnt do it sooner. I am now 108 pounds lighter
It did take me a little longer to heal than some of the younger people I know. but that's alright. I am no longer taking medications and no longer have any health problems. I have so much energy now and can keep up with my 18 month old twin grandbabies. This surgery has given me a whole new life. There are so many blessings, I cant even begin to list them all.
Do exactly as your Dr tells you, drink your water, eat your protein, take your vitamins, listen to your body and enjoy the start of a brand new life.
Best wishes to you!!!
Rita
