Hot Flashes have returned
Hi Yall,
I'm 4 weeks out from lap RNY, and during the first 3 1/2 weeks post surgery, I had a glorious respite from my hot flashes. I thought Oh good, the surgery has curred them for me. But NO! they've returned. I had read somewhere that estrogen is stored in our fat, as we burn off the fat, the estrogen would be released and WaLa, no more hot flashes. Isn't working for me.
I've been proscribed Gabapentin so I can sleep through the night without being awakened by the hot flashes. I haven't taken it since surgery as the pills are huge. I think I'm gonna crush them and take them with applesauce. It's been three nights of broken sleep so far, and I'm tired.
Any other tricks or medical solutions out there? I've taken, then quit hormones, tried soy and black cohash (no good for me). Oh I'm 51 and have had the flashes for about 4 years.

I don't know if you can crush Gabapentin ... I think they're capsules. I take it for nerve pain.
I was on hormones for five years after surgery and this year decided to wean myself off them ... but actually went cold turkey because I couldn't afford them any more. Besides, my gyne in Michigan where I used to live said you don't want to be on them very long (low-dose, short-term ... and I think maybe five years is the limit). So now I'm having night sweats and mini hot flashes.
You may be having hot flashes now because, so soon after surgery, your estrogen is being released as you lose weight rapidly. They may stop eventually.

Oh yes, you will have hot flashes whilst the rapid weight loss goes on. Estrogen is stored in fat and will cause them.
I am unable to take estrogen anylonger since I have had blood clots (I had a hyst at age 39 and took them for 10 years until the clots) and still at age 58 almost 59 continue to have hot flashes. That situation goes not happen for everyone however, most once you stabalize with weight loss, they do subside. good luck!

Hi Cheryl, I'm a Cheryl W. also!
I have had hot flashes since I was 50 and I will be 54 in a few months. I am 3+ years out from surgery and mine wax and wane. Mostly wax. They are AWFUL! But in this cold weather when I am cold I just remind myself that in a few minutes I will be HOT! Mine happen every 15-20 min all day most days. And they are very uncomfortable. Almost burning sometimes. I don't take anything for them. Just my personal choice. I use them to my advantage. :-)
Hope you get some relief,
Cheryl
