Topic: water

Hello, i wanted to ask about drinking water. I am three months out (revision from sleeve to bypass). I am doing pretty well, thank God. I was wondering if I can drink water as usual or does it have to be 4 ounces per hour? I can drink water as I have done before the surgery. I am staying well hydrated, I drink more than 64 ounces a day. Can water make my pouch grow? I do separate water from food, I wait at least 30 min before eating after I drink water.
Thanks,

S

Everyone is different but overall my weight loss has put me a few months ahead of the OH Post-Op Planner projections.

I revised from Lapband to RNY on 8/16. You can see my stats and monthly losses in my signature line.

Good luck to you! Getting the lapband out of me is the best thing I have ever done!!

"I have been reading sad stories all day about hernias and bowel obstructions ..."

Hi You MAY be prone to a hernia over time if you gain weight, and the organs push on a 'weak' fascia/'tissue like' ab muscles over the organs.

I am at OH to read up on options of all kinds since I have a large incisional hernia, or 'ventral hernia," mine was from extensive emergency abdominal surgery to save my life in 2011.

The "necrotic strangulation" people fear is less with a larger hernia, a bit of intestine poking between muscles is where the strangulation can happen.

If you imagine the tough sheath (fascia)over the intestines and organs, well, it develops an opening that gets larger, like an oval or circle. Or it can be like swiss cheese with smaller holes all over, and omomentum fat pushes thru.

I am GUESSING you have no immediate fascia/belly hernia opening. Mine took til 2014 to look a little rounded, then bigger each year til now.

The solution is plastic surgery, a piece of plastic surgical 'mesh' is placed over the opening, tacked to the other tissues, and it keeps the intestines and organs from creeping out. In 40% of obese patients men and women this large hernia is likely over time because the extra visceral fat around the organs pushes out, and, with 24/7 gravity, weakening the sutures and muscle.

Wearing a tight belly wrap band, Spanx girdles over time helps. your MD can tell you more on what is done to repair, but lying down on bed, & pulling up a 'girdle' is what many do.

Topic: Nausea solutions??

Hi. I had my RNY on Nov 28, 2018 due to GERD. My VSG was May 2008. I had no nausea for 2 weeks. It was like a honeymoon. Then the last 4 weeks have been horrible. I know there can be mechanical reasons for it and I see my surgeon on Jan 15, 2019. My nutritionist wants me to add protein powder to anything I can keep down for now. My gums are bleeding and even on compazine for nausea, I get break through nausea and average about 30 grams of protein per day.

I know each of our journey's are unique and my path is not your path but it would help to know the challenges that others have faced and overcome as I believe this year is going to be very challenging year for me. I am not sorry I had it done. I am off ALL GERD medications, off Metformin, and to prepare for this surgery I was weaned off of ZOLOFT.

Topic: RE: Coffee after surgery

You are drinking coffee? Wow! My sleeve from May 2008 was revised to RNY on Nov 28, 2018 and I am 6 weeks out and just now allowed to add decaf coffee into my nutrition a couple of times a week. I am told not to add a real cup of coffee until I am 6 months out at least. Caffeine dehydrates you and hydration is JOB ONE for all us. Best of Luck in your journey. I am excited. RNY is an extreme but fantastic tool in our lifelong fight against obesity.

I had an RNY Nov 28, 2018 due to GERD. I had developed intractable GERD. My sleeve was May 2008. I am very happy with my experience. Surgery went extremely smoothly and I am 66. But this is my experience and my journey. I was in the hospital less days with my rny than with my sleeve. Recovery is a little trickier as pertains to nutrition. You have to chew your calcium +D, b12 goes under the tongue, and I chew 2 flintstones vitamins each day. It is more strict and serious to slowly advance through the food stages of full liquids, purred foods, soft foods, and then finally to hit your forever foods. I am 6 weeks out and not our of pureed foods yet. Is is worth it? YES. I am off ALL acid reflux meds. Is weight loss slower? YES. Probably because I weight far less than I did when I had my sleeve. Is weight coming off? YES. Are there challenges? YES

I am up for any challenges. If I can make my feet hit the floor weekday mornings to go to the Y and exercise,

I can do anything. I am superwoman. And so are you!

Topic: RE: Technical question for revision vsg to bypass

I had a revision as well 6 months ago but was still having reflux. I sought a second opinion and he thinks my surgeon did not fix a hiatial hernia that was detected on a CT scan prior to surgery. He also thinks he made my pouch too big. So waiting on an appointment with Cleveland Clinic. Glad your reflux resolved. Been dealing with mine for three years

My surgeon says my pouch is the size of a hard boiled egg. I had revision Nov 28, 2018 due to GERD. My sleeve was May 2008. As long as everything works like it is supposed to, I do not care about the GE junction. I am off ALL acid reflux meds. Off Metformin. I am almost happy I developed intractable GERD.

Topic: RE: Revision loss rate

I had a revision from a sleeve to a gastric bypass on Nov 28, 2018. I am 6 weeks out and I can verify weight loss is slower for me. But this is my journey, not yours. I can not speak for everyone. My starting weight is lower, so I expected my weight loss to be slower just because of that. I had surgery because of intractable acid reflux so any weight loss is a bonus to me, not the main reason. I am exercising and following all guidance. I am off all acid reflux meds! Even with the sleeve I was never off metformin. But now I am off metformin. I would recommend the RNY as an excellent TOOL in your tool box to use in the life long fight against obesity. I am now 8 pounds away from a BMI that would mean I am merely overweight and not obese. That is huge in my universe. Best of Luck in whatever direction you go.

I just revised from lap band to RNY in December. I am 4 weeks out today and down 15lbs. We'll see what the next few months bring, but this is a good start.

Of course everyone is different ~ I hope it goes well for you!
