Why did u decide RNY over lap band??

For me it was:

~the amount of weight I needed to lose.
~I am NOT disciplined
~the nurse in me started thinking about band erosion.

I am thrilled that I decided on the RNY and wouldn't change my decision for anything.

1.  I needed to lose a lot of weight, about 130 pounds when I started, and 100 pounds at surgery time.
2.  I didn't want to have to do fills.  I have needle phobia, and I didn't think I could take it.
3.  I was concerned more concerned about slippage, erosion, etc. than the surgical complications.  I wanted to take the majority of my complication chances all at once.
4.  My info session talked about how the band was 'easier to cheat' and I started thinking about how I could do it.  I knew I needed more than just portion control in my weight loss tool.

I don't have any regrets.  I think RNY was the right choice for me.

I chose RNY over band for a couple of different reasons:

1.  I was a sugar addict and I wanted the threat of dumping.  I do dump after a certain threshold.  I can have a small regular cookie now and again but I haven't tried cakes or pies.  Frozen yogurt is fine too.  I still have my gallbladder and fried foods have always done a number on me even prior to WLS.  That may be an issue at some point.

2.  I wanted the restriction and did not want a foreign object in my body which could potentially be rejected.  The band is also very high maintenance with the fills and all.  The restriction is continuing to teach me satisfaction versus puky full.  Even after almost 2 years, I continue to learn.

3.  I had over 200 pounds to lose and my surgeon did not recommend it with my BMI.   I chose RNY over other alternatives because no organ was removed.  Once something is gone, it is gone.

4.  My insurance covered the RNY.

5.  RNY does not remove any organ.  Once an organ is gone, it is gone.

I have absolutely no regrets over my choice other than I wish I could have done it years ago.

All the reasons listed above plus I know several people that have had the Lapband put in and all of them have either gained most of their weight back, have not lost anywhere near what they thought they would or have just given up and not gone back for all the "adjustments".

If I'm going to have such a drastic thing done, I want it to work and I'm afraid Lapband won't.

RNY was the right choice for me.

For me as many others, it was for 2 reasons.

1.  It showed the best results for diabetics.
2.  My doctor recommended it.  Based on my medical information.

I started my journey planning on the Lap band simply because my Dr and Insurance referred me to a Dr that only does the Band.  As I learned more I decided the band was not right for me.  I am type 2 diabetic and have many health issues.  The RNY has a better success rate for ending the health issues and faster weight loss.  I wanted something less "forgiving" too.  Also my Insurance would pay for the surgery for the band, but not for all the follow up fills.  Better check into this for sure!  Can be very expensive in the future. I am very happy with my RNY.  All my health issues are gone.  No more meds for diabetes, HBP or High Cholesterol.  Also no more sleep apnea machine.   I LOVE MY RNY

I am only one, But still, I am one.  I cannot do everything, but still I can do something.  And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do
the something that I can do.

I can tell you why I chose the band:

-I was scared to have my insides re-arranged
-I figured the band would be adjustible for life, so If I needed more restriction, I could get it.
-I figured that if I ATE LESS, I would naturally lose weight...duh!
-My family was afraid for me to have the bypass
-Ive seen people get sick (now I know its because they didnt take care of themselves and take their vits)
-I figured (stupidly) that Id be one of the 'lucky ones' who dont have to DIET all the time and life would be wonderful and rainbows and roses...blah.

**edited to add...while this surgery is not a right fit for me...it does work wonderfully for many people. This is only MY experience**

Now, why I want the RNY:

-I want to lose weight
-Im still scared to have my insides re-arranged, but I feel that I need the malabsorption.
-I feel like the band was my training wheels and Im ready for the big girl bike now.
-I want to lose weight
-I want a surgery that will work WITH me when I work with it, not against me and make me puke all the time
-I want to lose weight
-While I take into consideration how my family feels, I know my DH supports me and I know Im doing this for me and only me. I appreciate my family's concern, but I need this.

Stay far away from the band...seriously. Or try to find people that are 5yrs post op with it and see how happy they are (if they still have it in there). I wish they would take it off the market here in the US.

WOW!  You guys are awesome.  My BMI just reached 40 by a pound but that really wasn't a concern getting the surgery because with my BCBS it's very easy to get covered even with a BMI of 35.  I have sleep apnea but my biggest concern is my irritable bowel.  The Dr said I could have either surgery with it though.  With IB I take meds and know what will irritate it and what won't.  If I choose to eat those items anyways, I know the consequences.  (I think that is also true with WLS)   I am really leaning towards RNY but am a little concerned about the long recovery vs band.  I also am concerned about hair loss (my hair is thin to begin with).  I am 39 and 233 lbs- I don't want to keep having surgeries so I like that about RNY as well.   I also like the rapid weight loss- I don't want to wait 3 years to lose this extra 100 lbs.  I also am a huge Diet Pepsi fan.... guess that will be gone too!!

Agree with lots of what's above. Just to tack on one more I haven't seen too much:

I move a LOT.  Pretty much once a year.  The band kind of tethers you to a doctor for fills and stuff.  I needed to be free from that for professional reasons.

Having RNY was probably the best thing I've ever done for myself.

Approx highest weight: ~350. Highest measured weight: 338. Surgery weight: 297. Lowest weight (for 5 minutes): 169. Current weight: 209. Goal weight: ??? - maybe 180-185, which was my maintenance weight before the regain.
