RNY ME?........WELL DS YOU!
okay here I go...forgive the typos cause i am emotionally charged here. I was scanning through the threads having been off OH for a few days where I ran across a poster who had RNY back in 07...she got off track and came back to OH for some support and love
......I think she was looking into a revision to put a band around her RNY...i remember her name but I won't out her unless she outs herself out of respect....Now a responder posted...I know her name too had the nerve to say that she should have gotten a DS because she wouldn't have had the weight loss failure AND get this RNY'rs she would have been able to keep her "God given anatomy".....her pyloric valve so she doesn't dump......WHAT THE ****
First of all before I had RNY 2 years ago...my goal was to save my health in order to save my life...there are always sacrifices to give up...what about people who have had limbs amputated, donated a kidney to save another, given blood, received transplants...i can go on. This %$#@$ made it seem as though DS is the number one surgery to have. I am going to be honest. My first choice was lapband. I did not have it because of the amount of weight I needed and wanted to lose asap to get rid of my comorbidities. I had heard of stomach stapling, lap band, Fobi Pouch and of course RNY made even more popular because of well known celebrities having them. RNY saved my life...There are alot of parts of our anatomy we can live and fully function without. sometimes we are born with defects. Is that God's fault? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
If your are a DS and your gallbladder needs to come out will you keep it even though it is part of your GOD-given anatomy? This is not to insult any DS patient, sleeve patient, or whatever other wls options are out there but when I read that thread from a few days ago, I was insulted. All WLS CAN FAIL IF YOU FAIL IT....just for the ******g record!!!! and if GOD wants to take a part of my anatomy i was born with because it was defected or became injured beyond repair or diseased and I can go on to live a good or better quality of life then so be it...take it out cause I know who wakes me up in the AM...GOD, Jesus Christ my Saviour regardless who believes in him or not....and for the last piece of info....All RNY'rs don't dump....I don't...and I can eat any damn thing I want.....nah!

Seriously...tell us how you REALLY feel! LOL!
I think the surgery wars will always be. I try not to get into it too much. To me, if a person is intelligent, they'll do their research and choose the surgery that is right for their needs. If they don't, to me, they kinda deserve what they get (this is coming from someone who did no research and yes...me too...).
The DS is a good surgery. It's right for a lot of people but not everyone. I think that's my point of contention. I DO dump and I'm glad. My brain doesn't understand "shouldn't." It understands "can't" loud and clear though. So I am thankful for that.
Could I have lost more weight with the DS? Maybe. But in the end I love my RNY. And not just because I've lost so much weight but because in the PROCESS I FOUND me! That's worth more than any statistic.

The end result is what is important. People succeed and fail with all types of surgery. It is not about the type of surgery but about how we use the surgery as part of a new way to live. Surgery is kind of like detox for drinkers. It physically keeps us from the compulsive overeating, etc that we did before. It does not take away those behaviors, but gives us a chance to change them.
No matter what type of surgery we have, if we do not change our eating behaviors, we will fail.

That's a really good way to think of it, Steve.
Loving my new life! I'm ever so grateful...

I had RNY and i work with it. It is what it is and i am stuck with it. I did the best I could when I was faced with what surgery I to have. Do I wish I still have my pyloric valve? Yes, almost everyday, or at least 2-3 times a week.
Do I wish I had DS - only some days.
But it is what it is. I deal with RH and that sucks. Big time. i can deal with the 'early dumping" but RH kicks my butt every day. i need to be on a low carb diet or else. The else is no good. But low carb diet also mean depression and low energy for me. Not fun.
Glad you do not have that complication. But - I do what I can given I have RNY. It was my choice, but then I was not aware that RH is so common post op RNY , and how bad RH can really be and how badly that can mess you up.

My sister had a DS and has major RH (reactive hypoglycemia). She has been made it to the ICU more than once when the hospital was unable to get her blood sugar up. For those who are unaware, RH is quite serious. Time will tell what the real cause of RH is - I have wondered if they are wrong about it being the pyloric valve.
Laura, when I decided to have the RNY, I knew RH was a possibility but I knew that folks with other surgeries or no surgery with significant weight loss can also get it. Back then, I decided maybe more RNY'ers got it cause RNY was the most commonly done surgery.
Since then, I don't know. Some revisions from RNY to DS say that they don't have it anymore but I think it is up to everyone's pancreas so it is a crapshoot. Scary stuff for sure.
I'm very thankful it hasn't been an issue for me. I think I've had a reaction that might've been RH might've been dumping twice. Both times after no protein and something bad to eat. I'm lucky. I'm sorry your sister has had problems and I'm sorry H2 is having problems.

@H2....what is RH...sorry for not knowing all the abbreviations....and also I ordered the Proferrin iron and have been using them...They are long and sleek...wonder if I can swallow it whole but I am scared...do you break it in half or cru****I take 2 a day...thanks for the opinion about the hemme iron...had my 2 year wls appt..everything gooooood over here just a little low iron but I menstruate badly post-op sorry for TMI but again what is...........RH?
The RH is what scares me. To tell you the truth if I had it all to do over again I would not have had WLS. When it comes down to it there is no free lunch. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat less and exercise more. I have lost weight many times and in some cases kept it off for years but I always fell off the wagon. There is no cure for obesity, only treatment. I wish I didn't mess with my anatomy. If the end result is having to diet and exercise anyway I wish I didn't have to have surgery to force me to do that. And to know that given my history I have a greater chance of failing and winding up where I started makes me wonder why I put myself through all this.
