Go through with it if you have the insurance, you won't know if your next job will have a policy that covers it.  As for your out of pocket make payment arrangement with the hospital after your insurance has settled their part.

I THINK your insurance should cover you through the end of the month.....because you have probably paid for the entire month already.  I'm being optimistic here, but I say have the surgery!  You would have needed time off to recover and you will now have that withough pressure.  Trust me when I say the self confidence you will have after surgery will help you so much in looking for another job.  You will be healthy and self confident.  Thinkin of you and wishing you the best.

I was in a similar situation with my daughter.. I lost my job but my daughter was scheduled for surgery. I would say go ahead... you can deal with the bills after the fact. Luckily part of my severance negotiations was for them to pay for my first month of cobra coverage for her to get her surgery. I had already had mine last year
Babygirl got her surgery March 3rd...     She's from 339 to 200 as of 6/14/2012.. SOO proud of my bigbabygirl

Before you decide you really need to know EXACTLY how long your insurance will cover you. And exactly how much COBRA coverage will cost you.

My guess is that unless you elect COBRA, you will only be covered through March 31st. While that would cover you for the surgery, you would have NO coverage for any aftercare or medications.  And if you happened to have any complications, you would be responsible for the entire bill, which could be substantial. Can you pay that out-of-pocket without a job?

If you do decide to go ahead with the surgery, you really need to make sure you elect COBRA coverage, even though it will be ridiculously expensive. You need to do it for 2 reasons: first, to make sure you have medical coverage for your recovery, and second, to make sure you have continuous medical coverage for when you get your next job. If you are continuously covered you won't have to worry about your WLS being considered a pre-existing condition the new insurance won't cover. (The ban on non-coverage for pre-existing conditions under the healthcare reform act hasn't kicked in yet.)

Thanks everybody.

I just talked to my (former) boss.  I have two months of banked time for health insurance.  After that it would be cobra.  I've got to talk to my mom before I decide anything.

Thanks.

Do the surgery...here's why....

If you interview for a job with someone who is thin and has the same qualifications, the thin person will get the job, especially if it's a professional position.

Several reasons for this...

First is appearances.  A company represented by and overweight staff appears to not care about themselves, so why would they care about their customers.

Second, insurance.  Companies veiw overweight employees as more money out of their pocket if they are paying for insurance.  The more their employees use the insurance, the more it'll cost them.  Even if you don't use the insurance that often (as my hubby and I don't) they go by appearance, and traditionally, overweight people have more health issues and need to use their insurance more.

Third, they always veiw overweight people as lazy, and less productive.  They want as much as they can get for their money.

Get your surgery, for yourself and to get a better job!

Good luck to you huney...you deserve this surgery....you have earned it!
