Do you eat when....

Just wondering if we should eat when we're not hungry? I'm not talking about eating because we're bored. I am almost 3 month post op and I never feel hungry. I kind of feel like I have to force feed myself just to get some food in me.  I'm suppose to be doing three small meals and 3 small snack a day.  I can say I am barley doing that. So that is why I ask should I just eat even though I am not hungry? I'd like some of your thoughts.

Why?  Because without protein and some calories, you will get very sick and eventually die.

You don't get light headed or feel hungry when you don't eat??? I am still only 23 days out but if I don't eat I get shaky, light headed then eventually feel hungry.  If you don't eat then maybe you should drink your protein slowly.  I usually nurse an isopure protein drink if I am not going to eat food.  Try it, they are good.

Isn't it exciting not to be hungry?!? You should definitely continue to eat regular small meals throughout the day. It will keep your blood sugar level and will help keep your metabolism from slowing down. You should also try very hard to get all of your protein in. That will help you maintain your lean muscle mass and you definitely want to keep as much muscle as you can so that your body can continue to effectively burn fat and calories.

Enjoy it while it lasts!!

Take good care!

What Kelly said!

If I only ate when i was hungry (or lightheaded from not eating), I would be a skeleton now.  Even at nearly 4 years post-op, I don't get "hungry"... but I do get lightheaded, nauseous, and shaky if I don't eat about every 4 hours.

Yes you should eat when you are not hungry, there is a very real chance that you won't get physical hinger for many more months.  Like many of us you should plan your meals and eat on a schedule and eat measured quantities.  Personally I plan out everything but dinner m-f the day before.  I have my lunch and snacks already the night before and the days I don't plan for I really find myself screwed because I don't take in enough calories (yes it is possible).

I eat on a schedule. Because I do get very weak and feel awful if I delay it, even if I am not feeling any hunger! I eat my breakfast between 8-9 and lunch by noon-1pm and supper between 5-6pm. It helps me so much. When I was cleaning my daughters room and didn't want to stop, I didn't eat lunch till 3pm, then I was so queasy that I could barely eat it and felt awful the rest of the day and had to only drink my water and protein. Eat on a schedule, it helps tremendously and keep up with your water and protein drinks to supplement!

I am 18 months out of my surgery and I find that when I skip meals, go long periods between meals it is harder for me to eat.  I get very full and nauseaus, shaky, light headed, and it is hard to eat a decent meal.  Even after 18 months it's still trial and error and when and what to eat.

Absolutely what Kelly said!

It's a total change from our pre-op lives, when we (or many of us anyway - including me) ate at the wrong times, too often, and for the wrong reasons, and we needed to ONLY eat when we were physically hungry.

After surgery, with the nerves cut/damaged/healing, you may not get a hunger signal. I still don't after 16 months. But your body needs a certain amount of nutrients to function, so even if you are not hungry you need to be careful to get your protein in regularly (all of it at once is not as efficient for your body as dividing it up), your fluids, and your other food groups to keep your body going.

It's a huge mind change, but very necessary.

Yes you have to eat if you aren't hungry.  I have to make myself eat 3 meals a day and try to snack too or I don't have enough nutrition.  Are you doing protein shakes?  It may be a requirement for you right now if you can't eat enough protein.
