protein bullet IS THIS THE ONE????

Unfortunately, if you look closely, you will see that the FIRST -- and therefore most abundant -- ingredient in their proprietary protein mix is biopeptides (which are chemically altered protein chains...see my response below)).

Just becasue it has SOME whey protein doesn;t make it GOOD for us.  Even the bulltes that are primarily collagen protein based have SMALL amounts of whey.

If whey protein is not the very FIRST item in the protein ingredient list (after water), you should pass it by!

Hmmm... very curious.  It indicates that it has a proprietary combination of biopeptides and two types of whey protein...  Biopeptides are basically chemically altered protein and amino acid fragments.  The odd thing is that biopeptides are frequently advertised in anti-aging skin care products.

I"m not feling well so am not inclined to spend a lot fo time doing Google searches on this at the moment, but what I would say is that:
1) just because they advertise this as "doctor recommended", doesn't mean it is really a good protein for us (or that more than a doctor or two recommended it, and, hell, there are surgeons out there still recommending Flintstones vitamins and calcium carbonate post-op, so there awill always be a few doctors willing to say somethign is probably ok!!!)
2) it sends up a red flag for me that they do not mention anything about the PDCAAS score OR about whether or not it contains ALL of the amino acids needed to absorb the protein (and these have been the two widely distributed criticisms of other protein "bullet" products... so if this product WAS truly different, and IS truly good for us, I would expect that those things would be a BIG part of their marketing campaign!).
3) although it would be easy to get 42g of protein in a very small amount of liquid, if their claims are just advertising hype, you are putting your health (and your hair!) at risk by NOT getting enough quality protein.  The health problems that could result long term from inadequate nutrition during the first few months after surgery can be serious. Personally, I would not risk it when there are PLENTY of ways to get known quality protein supplements into your body.

I would specifically ask your doctor if (s)he knows-- or inquire of the company that makes these --  what the PDCAAS score of these is (they will likey not provide the info, especially if these are NOT close to 100).  The score of whey protein isolate (in the traditional whey shakes and nectars) is 100;  the score of the collagen protein that is in the other "bullets" is ZERO.

I have a very stupid question.

Do we get all the protein and the amino acids needed to digest it from meats and fish?

As of right now, I"m only getting 10g of protein from a supplement and it's unflavored whey protein isolate.  All other protein comes first from meat then cheese and eggs.

Thanks!

We do malabsorb SOME of the protein we get, but -- to MY knowledge, anyway... and I will gladly defer to someone with more knowledge than I have -- meats. fish, and dairy provide all the amino acids necessary to digest and absorb the protein in them.

Doctors also recommend Flintstones vitamins and TUMS for calcium - but I don't buy that either...

Whey protein is not listed first, the other two are.  That means that there's more of the first kind than the second.  What it doesn't tell you is how much of each... so technically it COULD be 98% Biopeptides, 1% casein protein and 1% whey.  Not a very good deal IMO.

However, casein is a milk protein that is fine for us - just not as optimum as whey would be.  We absolutely want to stay away from the collagen proteins though.

So unless you can find out exactly how much of each is in there I would find something else that has whey or casein listed first...

I had found a protein bullet..I can't remember the name, something Whey, but anyways, it was kind of thick and smelled horrible, but once mixed with water and some Mio...it was very tollerable.  I'll have to dig around and see if I can find which one it was.  I got it from my surgeon's office and it made it easy to get some protein in.  I would mix the whole tube (45 grams of protein) in a huge bottle and just drink on it thru the day.

If it was thick and in a tube ("bullet"), it was likely New Whey... and it is collagen protein and is CRAP protein that you cannot absorb anyway... so is a waste of calories and money.  Ask you surgeon if (s)he is aware that it is collagen protein with a PDCAAS score of ZERO.  Chances are the answer will be "no".

Great work on this, Lora.  I don't know why it is that so often people seem to want to take the easy way out with these questionable (or useless) protein bullets when it is so easy to just use the gold standard of pure protein whey isolate.
