my plan says to get 64 oz of fluids in a day does that mean only water? or any kind of liquids? like carnation instant breakfast, milk, water, anything? or just strictly water?

The water in protein shakes count, as do milk, decaf tea and coffee and crystal light-like drinks. Don't count caffeinated beverages (some say add additional volume on top of your daily goal equal to the volume of caffeinated beverage you drink).

Yes, with one exception. If you drink coffee (even decafe) or other caffeinated beverages, my sugeon recommends you double the water. If you had an 8 oz cup of decafe coffee, he recommends drinking an extra 16 oz of water that day.  Caffeine tends to dehydrate some through more urination, thus the reason for more water. Dehydration is the number one reason for going back to the hosptial after RNY, so drink your fluids.  I had RNY in 2006 and have done well. My wife had a revision from a 1980 gastric wt loss surgery that had issues. No matter how much I tried to get her to drink fluids, she ended up back in the hosptial for 3-4 days about 3 weeks post op. DAVE

I was told to count anything that would easily go through a straw as a liquid (which would include things like soup broth), but to only count half the amount if the liquid contained caffeine (as Dave mentioned).

thanks guys! I've only been drinking milk, carnation instant breakfast ( cn't stomach any other protein shakes) & crystal light. I haven't tried decaf tea, or coffee. not a big coffee fan anyways without sugar lol. so i guess i have been getting in my 64 oz with just that kinda stuff! thank you: )

if you don't mind me asking Kristen; how much protein do the carnation instant breakfast drinks have? and do you just get the SF ones? I have weird reactions to aspartame, but hopefully these are made with splenda. thank you!

they are 13 grams in the pre-made bottles. and i think the packet of mix ins are less but you mix with milk so really it ends up being the same around 13g. it is called no sugar added. the only sugar is from lactose.
