No Carbonation at ALL??

I understand that we shouldn't drink soda post RNY, but can we have any carbonation at all?  I am 3 1/2 yrs out and have mostly avoided soda this whole time.  I have had a can that has halfway gone flat of diet coke but it's just not the same.  I wasn't a big soda drinker before surgery either, so I don't miss it that much.  But I have had sips of soda here and there or taken a day to drink a can of diet coke.  I get my water in each day but it's nice to have a little bubbly like once every few months... but it's not the same as yummy water or crystal light.

But my REAL question, my husband bought some fruit flavored drinks last night at Costco that have carbonated water in them-  they have fruit  juice and splenda flavoring.  I don't dump on sugar unless it's a pretty good amount, like 30 gms.  Would this be ok to drink for me, it has 0 gms of sugar.

What does carbonation do to our RNY stomachs and is it ok to have it occasionally if it's not soda?  Is there PROOF out there that the carbonation does anything to our stomachs or is it just speculation from our dr's what it does to our new stomach?  Thanks!

*My* understanding is that carbonation doesn't physically do anything to our stomach/pouch.  However, it is also my understanding (from OH conference) that 75% of the people who have experienced regain have resumed drinking soda.  Not necessarily a correlation -- but for me -- not worth chancing.

I agree with Laura. The majority of people I know "in real life" who have had WLS and drink soda, even diet soda have gained back a ton of weight.  I'm not going down that slippery slope.

A former training coach told me that you won't lose weight if you are drinking carbonated sodas. I didn't want to believe her so I didn't stop and I didn't lose weight either. During last summer when on the liver reduction diet I cut back to 1 coke a day and did start to lose. Post surgery I have not had a coke and have been afraid to up again. I don't really miss them so much.

I would personally stay away from soda only because its a trigger and a problem for ME.

But your talking carbonated flavored water and it has splenda in it.  I would drink that.  But i would take it slowly as the carbonation might give your pouch gas problems.  Take it slow at first to see what the carbonation does.

yeah if I am going to drink the carbonated fruit drink, I would take a whole day to drink the 20 oz. The carbonation doesn't seem to be a problem for my pouch I've found. Now dh has a problem with soda and loves it (but hasn't had RNY), I have never had a problem being addicted to soda or drinking it too much.

Post op, I've found that I love a good glass of water now and 1% milk is really yummy too. Also, Trop 50 is my favorite for OJ. I never used to drink very much water pre op and now I drink it all the time (room temperature)!!!

So since the carbination doesn't bother you, I see no harm in sparkling water. Some people are affected by caffeine in sodas, some are bothered by gas, some feel diet sodas are a "trigger" food. It just depends on your tolerance if it's an OK liquid.....

The only thing carbonation MIGHT do to your stomach is give you gas.  If it does not (it does not give me gas) it is fine to drink it.  Actually, it's fine to drink it if it does give you gas, if you don't mind having gas.

I'm only 7 weeks out but I did ask my nutritionist about this last week.  She said that it was mainly the gas bubbles that could upset your stomach.  She said it's certainly not something she would recommend to have everyday, but every once in a while should be fine (providing the bubbles don't upset you).  She said she has heard that there is a possibility that the carbonation could lead to stretching your pouch over time (which I found interesting....wouldn't it be the stoma and not the pouch?) but she has not seen any studies or scientific evidence to back that up so she's not giving that theory too much thought.
I was asking her because during the summer time, I enjoy mineral water and lime and I didn't know if this was something I should try again.  I do think I'll try it, but very little to see how I do.  Anyway, hope that helps!

I found that a little diet soda helped the foamies and occasionally I drink one. I do burp alot. Now if soda was a trigger food for you then Dot drink it. I have so far not seen or had exploding pouch, stretching pouch or weight gain. Really? Exploding some people think? So like all foods it is different for everyone, so I experiment.
