 Great Artical  http://www.active.com/fitness/Articles/Can-You-Call-Yourself -an-Athlete.htm?cmp=17-1-2304

even after reading this and agreeing with a lot of the points I still have trouble identifying myself as being anywhere near an Athlete much less having those around me refer to me as one.  If you are one wear the title with pride!

I am an athlete.  Still very hard to wrap my head around that.  Losing weight and seeing myself as I really am has never been a problem for me.  I have no body issues....but the term athlete and ME in the same sentence, I almost feel like a fraud.  It catches me off guard when someone refers to me as a "runner" or someone "crazy about exercise".

I'm still working on this.  I've been down with pneumonia this week and haven't exercised since Saturday..........I am going bat **** crazy chomping at the bit to workout...........maybe I AM an athlete after all???!!!

It took my trainers many sessions of getting in my head that I am a athlete. Even being obese they said you ran a half marathon, you trained for months for this and loved running. You are a athlete. I did a half ironman in the gym over the course of 5 days LOL but every morning waking up at 5am to get to the gym and work they said you are inspiring others in here. When a lady watched me on the treadmill and said you must have been a runner I thought well damn it I guess maybe I am not that bad after all maybe I am in fact a athlete. My one trainer said when you do get this weight off (she isn't a fan of the RNY though) she said you are going to be a force. If you can do this as heavy as you are I can't wait to see what you do when the weight is gone. I can't wait either!

Maybe looking at your avatar and at your ticker will help you believe!

You have a point-when I see my pictures/reflection and the number of lbs I've lost it reinforces that I am healthy, thin (although still technically "overweight" by the BMI scale!), and have achieved and maintained weight loss.

I've done that with regular exercise.  I guess where I struggle is with the distiction of an athlete- to me that is a term for people who compete....and I don't compete...except against myself.

I run, I hike for miles, I do P90X and P90X2 regularly, yoga.....I embrace any physical challenge that comes my way.  I do know I'm an athlete, but I guess since it is a relatively new thing for me (last 3 years of my 47 year life!), it is taking a while to sink in!

I love when people ask me questions about running/exercising....and they appreciate the guidance I give them..........that is when I realize I might just know a thing or two about this athletic stuff!  At least I don't break out in hives anymore when I walk into Academy Sports!  That has to be a step in the right direction!

Hello!
I have put off my RnY for over a year because of surgeries to messed up tendons that were caused by trying to be too athletic too fast...yep, I'm one of those that pushes WAY past the pain.

What I was afraid of was that after the surgery, I wouldn't be able to be an athlete...I'd been training to be an athlete, I did a sprint triathlon in pieces because of the diabetes issues, but, I was afraid that if I had the surgery, I would never get to do another triathlon, walk/run a marathon, or even be able to complete some of the smaller races that I have come to love.

I love to move.
I love exercise.
I just have several things going on that will not let me drop the weight...and my docs have all come together to say, It's time...do the surgery.

so, seeing this thread, hearing ya'll....my heart feels settled that YES, I CAN be an athlete AFTER surgery!!!
thank you!

I don't understand why you beleived that after RNY you wouldnt be able to be an athlete?
Wouldn't it help you be a better athlete?

The reason I had an RNY was to be able to do the things I love to do.  I may not be a marathon runner or a triathelete, but I do love to backpack in the wilderness.  Backpacking 10 miles each day is a whole lot easier, and a lot more fun, when you weigh 100 lbs less!

Don't feel I'm there yet, but I am striving to be an athlete.
