Follow-up with surgeon after ER visit

I saw my surgeon today and was so happy that she wanted to see me so quickly after the ER visit to discuss what was going on with me. Next visit will be in September unless anything else happens...

So she basically thinks it's one of several things, one more likely than the other three:

1. A bezoar - basically, not chewing certain foods well enough (like seeds, fruit skins, grains) and they end up "clogging the drain", which can result in vomiting bile and painful gas buildup below the bezoar. Treatment is CHEW YOUR FRIGGEN FOOD, my quote, not hers.

2. An internal hernia - which would have been seen on the CT and would have been umbilical area pain, which I didn't have

3. an occlusion - something that sometimes happens to those with too little abdominal fat, where a blood vessel will grow over & occlude the bowel. One of those wait & see kind of things but would have likely shown up on the CT scan.

4. a stricture - not one of those that have completely shut off the pathway, but a smaller narrowing - again, something we'll keep monitoring, as it wouldn't have just shown up on certain foods but on all attempts at solids.

So my ER visit was a very expensive lesson on chewing my foods and probably needing to avoid certain culprits! And my surgeon again gave me props on my running and progress - she said I'm an inspiration to her in both!

Glad it doesn't appear to be serious! I have started to make an effort to chew better because I am afraid of those things you posted. I haven't been that aware of it in the past but like I said I am trying to get better.
Anyway, would you mind sharing some info on your running? When did you first start running and how long did it take you to build up to a half marathon? I will be doing my first 5K on the 23rd. I am excited and nervous at the same time!
Keep up the great work!

Congrats on the 5K! The journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step kiss. I started doing walks at about 6 weeks postop, then integrated jogging/running into my walks (like 30 sec at a time!****il I could run 1 min, then 2 min, then 1 mile, then.... I started a training program when I could run 3 miles (with little walk breaks, at about 17mo postop) and did my first 8K about 2mo into the program. I did my first Half this past December in 2:34:32, am signed up for my next this March and probably going to do my first Full in Oct! Feel free to look at my blog to read about my progress here on OH!

Isn't it crazy how this is a continual learning process? You'd think by now I'd have everything down pat!!

Glad it wasn't anything too serious!  I too need to be better about chewing, especially nuts/seeds and fruit skins!  You rock chick!  Keep up that running.  I haven't run in a week due to cold/rain.....I can handle cold, but with the rain, I'm not going out.  I've been back to boot camp though and with a few mods (due to still recovering from plastics) I'm able to do almost everything.  It feels good to push the old body to see what it can do!
