OT - just dropped off my cat for Radioactive Iodide treatment
It's not really an invasive procedure at all, just a little shot, but I'm really gonna miss my kitty, Ethan. He's gotta be in quarantine for 5 days so we won't see him until Friday, while they wait for his radioactivity to be down to acceptable limits for human contact. Ugh - one of those times where doing something good for one's health just doesn't feel so good..... snif, snif.

I'm so sorry that you are having to go through this and your little cat too. Praying that this week goes by very quickly for you. Try to keep busy so that you won't miss him quite as much and praying that he will be OK and that the procedure cures what is wrong with him.
Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

What happened? What's the treatment for?

It happens commonly in older cats but he was diagnosed with hyperactive thyroid last month. Never really showed any symptoms, other than some weight loss, but we have full labs drawn on him and our other cats every year to catch things like this early on. We tried him on oral meds since then, but they're not a cure, just treat the levels of thyroid, whereas R-I treatment actually targets the overactive thyroid cells & kills them off so that he can have a normally functioning thyroid again. They're doing this treatment now in preference to surgery, as it's more accurate and less complications. When my mom had Grave's disease, back 30 years ago, they took out too much thyroid during surgery and had underactive thyroid ever since!

Ah. Well, hopefully the five days go by fast!

I had the thyroid oblation done with the radioactive iodine back in 1990. Even that is a guessing game as far as how much they need to give you (they gave me too much so, like your mom, I get to take Synthroid for the rest of my life). I had to use a different bathroom than everyone else, had to keep my linens and clothing separate, and avoid pregnant woman completely. I was also not allowed to kiss anyone. I guess with a kitty, though, isolating them is the only option.
I hope the 5 days pass quickly!
