A friend of mine who suffers from RLS said she heard once to put a bar of soap under the foot of the mattress. She said it worked. Ive dealt with it a few times but never needed anything for it.

I feel your pain! For 3 years I had terrible leg and foot cramps at night to the point I dreaded going to bed. I tried everything from restricting unnecessary walking, increasing potassium, being hyper alert about dehydration, etc.  I was up 2-3 times a night using hot soaks or standing tearfully in a hot shower....my labs were perfect and my primary MD just shrugged.   By accident I was checking the 3 medications I take and discovered muscle cramping is a side effect when you're taking Prilosec, Nexium or PPI's....that interfere with magnesium absorption. I've taken Prilosec for 3 years.  bingo.   I now take 400 magnesium oxide and the cramps are essentially GONE.  It's been like a miracle.  If I feel cramping returning I take 800 for a few days.   I hope you find an answer because it can be night time misery... for sure.

Thanks guys! I have my yearly physical coming up with my primary care doctor next week so I will mention it to her then. My next lab draw isn't for another month but I will ask my PCP to check on my iron levels anyway (I do have a history of anemia, especially when I was pregnant with my daughter). In the meantime I will up my fluids, I'm usually at least 80+ oz. a day anyway but it can't hurt. Thanks for all of the advice and information!

RLS is very different from leg cramps. Left cramps involve muscle tissue and rls is purely nerves. I have had it for many years (while skinny and overweight). I have never heard of the tonic water but I am going to give it a try. Thanks for the posts. BTW my doctor told me my leg cramps are from low pottasium.

When my ferritin drops below 40 I get RLS... your was 28.. may be even lower now.
But try calcium and magnesium before. bed. 500 each. Also make sure you get enough sodium during the day every day ,- sometimes we forget we need salt for normal functions.

That is interesting, I can't recall my levels from when I was anemic, but I'm sure it was a bit lower. If I go by the reference range it appears normal, but definitely on the low side of normal. I wasn't taking an iron supplement pre-op but have been even since surgery (60 mg bariatric advantage brand iron). I already take calcium citrate + D 3x/day @ 500mg each but I will pick up a magnesium supp. tomorrow.

I am 3 years out and experience RLS. I have been dealing with it for years. My pcp never took it seriously. I have just been living with it so I really appreciate all of the suggestions; I am going to try the magnesium.
