How soon after RNY did you eat Brussels Sprouts?
Hi all,
I'm on lean proteins, 5.5 weeks out from surgery, and nothing has disagreed with me so far! I know we can have a bite or two of cooked veggies AFTER we get our protein in for the day. How soon did any of you have Brussels sprouts? Baked in the oven with some seasoning they are my FAVORITE veggie and I know they are cruciferous so I wonder when I can have them again. Thanks!
Stay warm, all!
I have never eaten them since my surgery because I think they are disgusting, and every surgeon's plan is different, but FWIW my surgeon had it on the list of veggies not to be eaten until 2 months out (that was the latest we added food) because either they are hard to digest or can cause gas (since I hate them, I didn't care which one of the two (or both) got them on the list).
My surgeon had a pretty liberal food plan, though, starting soft foods only 3 days post-op. I would suggest calling your surgeons's office or your nutritionist.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
Thanks, Lora! I think it may be the gas issue. My nutritionist is very unresponsive so this is helpful. I will wait another month or two.
Question-do you hate them because you had the canned kind that our moms made in the 70s and 80s? Lol. I used to hate them too, but roasted in the oven with garlic and red hot pepper flakes and a tiny bit of olive oil, I love them! Not trying to push them on you (I hate tomatoes and nothing anyone can say will change my mind) but I have seen people change their Brussels sprouts opinion in the last year or two, now that they are "chic" and on restaurant menus!
Why on EARTH would anyone want to eat brussels sprouts? Whatever bet you lost, it must have been a doozy.
Sorry. If you ever have a meat question, I'll be glad to help.
Edited for spelling.

What he said!! Ten years ago I made a New Year's Resolution never to eat brussel sprouts again and it is the only resolution I've kept through the years :-)
But to answer the original poster - I pretty much avoid foods that give me more gas than RNY already happily provides on its own. Just about everything I like that gives me more gas has to pass my new "I love it so much it's worth the gas" test. My mother in law, who was Swedish, called brussel sprouts "fispotatisar" (fart potatoes).
Trim ends from a honkin' big pile of Brussels sprouts and cut them in half through the ends.
Toss in a bowl with a smidgen of olive oil, a splash of balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper, and a couple of tsps of Parmesan cheese.
Spread on a baking sheet and roast at 350 degrees just until the very edges of the leaves start to get brown and crispy.
Zest a lemon over them.
Eat.

(And I've hated les sprouts all my life, only began to love them once I had them roasted a couple of years ago!)
