I am 5 days post op. I have been on clear liquids until today. I am starting protein shakes now and am not clear how much I can drink at once. Should I limit it to a few ounces or is it ok to drink a whole 11oz shake for a meal if I feel ok?

I don't know about others, but when I was 5 days out I would not be able to drink a whole shake at once. While on liquids, I didn't really think about set meals. I just sipped on a shake and water throughout the day, each day getting in a bit more protein in, until I hit my target ( mine was 60 grams of protein, yours might be different).

Liquids aren't going to hurt you... and getting protein in is important for many reasons including healing. So I would say...sip away... 11oz shake - I assume you are talking about premier, I wouldn't worry about getting it in during a certain time frame like a real meal. Just drink at a pace that is comfortable to you...everyone is different as to what that means.

I could finish one in 20 minutes or so at first. If it doesn't make you uncomfortable, you'll be fine.

Hi!

I was told to sip SLOWLY and get an 11 oz shake in within 30 minutes. I couldn't get though one shake because after 15 minutes it would get warm and I'd have to refrigerate it again. I'd go back and drink the other half an hour later though. They didn't want us "gulping" liquid till after about 2 weeks in, so sip and take it easy, and see how it feels. I'm not sure if other vets would agree with this, then again i'm only 6 weeks out.

I used the little medicine cups at first and kept the shake in the fridge so it stayed cold.  Took me an hour or more to get one in at first.  Now I can drink one in 20-30 minutes but I am five weeks out.

Thanks everyone. That makes me feel better. I started with a premier shake and actually liked it! It took about 30 or 45 minutes  of sipping but I got it all down. My goal is 60 grams of protein so that is two shakes per day.
