Hello! Has anyone delt with a fistula of their pouch into the old stomach? I just found out I have one, and I was wondering what others have done. Did you get it repaired or leave it alone? Thanks for reading and responding!

Topic: RE: Reactive Hypoglycemia

I just hit my 5 year mark in January and about 6 months ago I began to experience what I think is Reactive Hypoglycemia.

I, although I have not been to the doctor for it or been diagnosed. But after I eat a meal especially in the morning but if it has too many carbs involved like pasta or a dinner roll, I start to feel really shaky, diaphoretic, dizzy, light headed, and nauseated. And even though I may have just eaten a meal, I have to eat something else to make the symptoms stop.  These are textbook low blood glucose symptoms and I have also been diagnosed with PCOS this year which is an endocrine disorder and from what I read can cause insulin release issues.

I am just curious, what kind of things you guys experienced with the RH and have you found a way to control it?

Just the past two weeks I have been on a really low carb diet, only protein and non starchy vegetables, and I have felt better, but I had an episode just on WED where I had the RH symptoms after eating a protein bar . This honestly has me a bit frightened and I guess I should just go see my doctor, but I am not sure there is anything they can even do. Anyone else going through this RH thing?

For me, they are just so strange, not pasta like but really chewy and strange texture. The smell of them is not very pleasant and they are a little expensive. I personally really enjoy spaghetti squash. I just microwave it and them mix it up in sauce and cheese and bake in the oven for 20 min. That is my favorite pasta alternative.

It's just one of those things you have to try for your self to see if you like ot

Just wanted to chime in and say I am sorry you are going through all of this.  I know about those hernias...I have had 6 ventral hernias all with laparoscopic repairs. The last one my intestine was wrapped around my native stomach 3 times but thank god it was not strangulated or dead bowel, but it was close to getting there.  Anyway, from experience, I just had to make myself get up and move right away after surgery I wanted to sit in the recliner and take my pain pills, but I had to get up and work through the pain....it gets better with a little activity every day.  I think you have a good start with the walking every morning, it starts with little changes.

Hang in there :)

One of my favorite PB2 recipes that I make at least 3 x a week. It's super easy, high in protein and under 100 calories Woohoo!

1/2 cup cottage cheese (I use 1%)

2Tbsp Cool Whip free

1 packet splenda

1Tbsp PB2

1Tsp Sugar free strawberry preserves (or any flavor you like)

Put all the ingredients in a bowl, mix it up and enjoy! It tastes like a super creamy peanut butter dessert I love it.

Topic: RE: LADIES - WHERE ARE YOU GETTING YOUR SWIM SUITS FROM ???

I am super super picky about my swim suits. I will splurge and spend as much as I need to in order to get a good one that doesn't make me feel uncomfortable. I have bought two magic suits at $150 each and I hated both of them. I have a Calvin Kline from Macy's that I really love but I needed a new one for this season.

I was at of all places  Wal-Mart where I picked up this super cute pink suit with Rouching all throughout the body of the suit that really helped camouflage my belly it fit great and had really good bust support...all for 29.98! Yay! Yay! And since my thighs look like a melted cottage cheese candle..I wear shorts with my suit...cuz those swim skirts are no where near long enough for me. I found a pair of Bermuda swim shorts to match my suit at Family Dollar for 5 bucks! I hit the swim suit lotto this year! So maybe check out Wal-Mart They had some surprisingly cute and good quality stuff.

Topic: RE: Vets--at what point did you start eating your "now-sized" portions?

For me it was about year 3.

Like Laura said, it varies based on the food you are eating.

For example, I can eat a whole plate of salad probably two cups of lettuce with veggies, beans and whatever else I throw on there. If someone were to watch me eat a salad, they would never in a million years imagine I had RNY

I can eat a whole egg McMuffin, 6 inch turkey sandwich from Subway no problem.

But there are a few things that consistently make me miserable.

Number one offender is rice I can only eat a few bites of it because about 20 min after I eat it, I feel like my pouch will explode and it gets super tight and uncomfortable

Pasta is a close second to that. If the pouch pain isn't enough to keep me away, the HORRIBLE carb coma that I get afterwards usually steers me away.

And third would be meat. I can only eat maybe 2-3 oz of solid protein like grilled chicken at a time because it make me so full and uncomfortable feeling.

For me being a "scarfer" pre-op, I had to learn to slow down and chew my food but old habits die hard and I still scarf my food sometimes. I did it last week at dinner I inhaled my food in about 5 min completely mindlessly and felt like absolute crap afterwards.  I had planned to take a walk after dinner, but I made myself so sick I couldn't do anything except lay on the couch and wait for the pain to pass.

Best wishes to you :)

I hate to work out....really, really hate it but, even more than working out, I hate going to the gym because I personally feel uncomfortable and intimidated by the ultra fit people there and its just not an inspiring, motivating environment for me. So I do work out tapes at home. Julian 30 day shred, biggest loser tapes, and even P90X (umm ya with the P90X, I mostly stare at the screen and say nope, not even close!)

I bought a new one this weekend Hip Hop Abs...it's so much fun! I and sure I look really silly doing it, but of all the tapes I have done, I actually enjoy this one, and the instructor guy...is Hot! Holy cow! He dances really well and might be gay, but he is sure nice to look at!

Anyway just passing along a good find. I would rather shake it with hot instructor guy than do plank jacks while Julian yells at me any day :)

Topic: RE: I need veterans (5/10+ years out) opinions!

Post op life was hard for me at first because I had the mindset that once I lost the weight, I could finally quit "dieting" and go back to the way I was eating before I honestly was looking forward to it.

In 2008 when I had my RNY  surgery my life fell apart. I lost a cousin that was a sister to me to chronic illness she had suffered since birth, another close family member was brutally murdered, my 22 year old brother committed suicide, and my Grandpa was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer and moved in with us so we could take care of him, and then died later that summer.

I was a mess, I can't even tell you how I came out of 2008 alive. I hated myself, the world, and everything in it and I did not give a crap about my weight loss. I guess thankfully due to the depression and being completely occupied by my existence crumbling down around me, I didn't really eat I also didn't drink my protein, water, or take my vitamins. So that helped nothing, because I was falling apart emotionally and physically.

My hair fell out, I had cavities in my teeth, and for some reason I didn't care at that point I had lost about 100 pounds. In early 2010, something changed for me, I was finally in a place where I wanted to take care of me! I started taking my vitamins, I drank my protein shakes, and I went to the dentist and had my teeth fixed, and I followed up with my surgeon and my doctor.

The Doctors praised me for the weight loss and how well I had done (Oh God if they had only known what I was really doing!) I started exercising, logging my food intake, I joined Weigh****chers and became really interested in nutrition. I stopped eating red meat, and my life completely changed. I was happy again and functioning. I quit a job that I hated and took a new one.

So from that point on I have lost a total of about 130 pounds. My weight fluctuates 5-7 pounds depending on God knows what! One day its 147 the next day its 156.2 so who knows!

Every day I eat pretty much the same thing, Eggs for breakfast, Salad with chicken for lunch, dinner is something like a turkey burger and green beans and for snacks I eat fruit, salad, cottage cheese, yogurt, and I eat about 6 times a day.

On special occasions like Christmas, or my Birthday I eat whatever I want. I have a treat every day like a little snickers, fun size M&M or something like that.

I give all the credit to God to seeing me through those difficult times and helping me to come out on top, despite my best efforts to ruin myself.

Things are good now, I live a happy Post OP life and although food does still control me, I have learned to manage it and most importantly live with it.

sending best wishes to you on your journey!!

I am a late snacker too. It is really tough to break the habbit.

I had someone ask me once to give them my top two tips for managing to maintain my weight, no one had ever asked me that, so I thought about it and the most honest answer I could come up with was carrots, and spinach. Why those? because after I have eaten my protein and all my healthy foods for the day and I am pretty much out of calories, I turn to them when I must have something to eat. I make a huge spinach salad and use spicy mustard for the dressing, or I get my baby carrots out mix up 2T low fat sour cream, 1 T PB2, and one pack splenda, and I have a big ol' bowl of carrots and peanut butter dip.

Where before RNY my snack would have been 4 bowls of cereal while sitting on the couch watching tv (just honest)

So I haven't' quit snacking, I just do it much differently post RNY.

Well it's monday...I know this because I am at work and wishing it was Friday!

The late night snacking is a problem for me too. I noticed I was hungry after dinner so I would root around in the cabinents and make an unhealthy choice such as couple handfuls of the kids cereal, spoon of peanut butter, maybe a few chocolate chips...it is so hard to stop!

Lately, I have been trying to eat more protein and fat at dinner than I used to and it seems to help, and I keep my bag of baby carrots handy because I know if I really must have something to eat, late night,  they are a safe choice that I wont regret in the morning.

Topic: RE: Gaining Weight after you hit goal

Don't let the pouch fool you, The weight gain causing foods like potato chips, bread, and cookies, crackers go down really easy and turn to mush "sliding" right through that stoma so you can eat a lot of it before you even realize it. If you are not monitoring your diet, after so many years, the weight will pack back  on with little effort.  My best advice is to count every bite you take, and never stop. Conscience eating is a must for long term success, as is taking your vitamins, drinking your water, and moving off the couch.

Believe me I am not the first one to sign up for a zumba class or anything, but inactivity will catch up with you and make it difficult to stay at goal.  I hate to exercise so I try and do things during the day like only taking the stairs, walking for at least 30 min after work every day, and when I cant do any of that, I use the dreaded exercise tapes.  Even though I don't enjoy exercising, it's far far better than being MO again.

Best Wishes to you!
