Topic: RE: Why am I so nervous?
I'm nervous too! I don't have my surgery date yet but it's a coming! Just this morning I kept going over and over in my head should I even do this and should I just try to do it myself again. I lost 65 lbs by myself in 3 months back in 2001 but that was before my grandfather died and the depression set in, then the emotional eating came. I ended up gaining that 65 lbs and more back. I've changed my eating habits, just inactive...I have a few health problems but none that is severe....and this is what keeps going on and on in my mind. If I just start walking and keep eating healthy I should be able to lose 80lbs by September or October. But I came this far so I guess I'll push on and try to get over being nervous...I feel you.

Hi! I'm meeting with my surgeon today and nervous because I've been doing more research about the lapband and know it's not going to be as affective for me at my size which is 392.5 lbs. I didn't want the gastric bypass because of the re-rotating. I'm stuck between which one to get. I printed out information about the mini gastric bypass to present to my surgeon. Hopefully he does it...if not maybe he will be willing to do it for the first time on me....we'll see!
Hello I am looking for people who live in the Warren and Center Line area who are preparing for weight loss surgery or had the surgery. Possibly you are having it at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital on E. 10 Mile in Center Line or you had it there. I am preparing for surgery and even though I don't have my exact date as of yet I would like to keep in touch with others that are like me or was like me. Serious replies only please, maybe this summer we could form a walking group and just support each other through our journey of getting healthy.
Please contact me via email, if you are seriously interested in forming this group.
Thanks!

RNY (gastric bypass) is a re-routing of the intestine so that food and calories don't get a chance to absorb. Stomach stapling is the old term and method for the VBG, which has been significantly changed over the years. The VBG and the Lap Band ar both restrictive devices that use a band to create a pouch the size of a large egg at the top of the stomach. People are able to eat very small meals and stay full longer. The VBG is not adjustable, and the Lap Band has an attached port under the skin where the doctor can add or subtract saline to tighten or loosen the band according to the patient's needs and weightloss goals.
People who tend to be sweets eaters tend to do better on the RNY because of the "dumping syndrome" that can occur when too many sweets are consumed. The VBG and Lap Band tend to work well for people who tend to overeat, eat big, and eat often.
There is no one surgery that is superior to any other (my opinion). Every surgery is only as good and works as long and as well as the person *****ceives it. It is a life-long committment. Good luck to you and your search! I hope this helped.

Topic: RE: Gaining weight I had a VBG in 2005
I had the VBG in 2004 and keep track of my calories once and awhile. I find myself quite comfortably satisfied with 1100 to 1400 calories a day. It depends on my activity level as well. I do work out and run regularly. Many bariatric patients who gain some weight back do so because we tend to slip slightly into old habits. Remember to watch your portions of 3/4 cup to 1 cup of food total per meal, and no "grazing" between meals. Make snacks very small but healthy and satisfying. Don't get down on yourself. You have the right attitude of stopping this minor setback before it becomes a runaway train. We all have a bounce in weight once in awhile, but with your determination of maintaining this long and knowing what to do about it, you'll be back to your comfortable weight again soon! Keep your chin up! We're here for you if you need to talk!

Topic: RE: I LOVE MY VBG
Good for you! It's so great to read people who are in it for the life-long change and, even though you had a set-back, you still have that fight to get back on track! I too, had the VBG in May of 2004, and was 314 lbs. I have been very successful and it has become almost effortless for me to maintain my current weight of 170-175. Isn't life great now? Good luck on those 30 lbs and keep that great attitude!
