Topic: RE: vbg surgery... anyone over 300lbs
Hi, I was 298 when I had my VBG done in December 2008. I've lost close to 100 lbs and liked this surgery best since it didn't re-route my insides and liked that my weight loss was slow and not drastic. I honestly didn't want to have a huge weight loss quickly and since I'm tall didn't want to be all skin and bones. Would love you to add me as a friend if you need support. Enjoy your day! Heide

no dumb question- VBG has been around for a few decades, lap band has pretty much replaced it essentially part of the stomach (the upper part ) is stappled off, then a band i put below that area
VSG is when about 80% of your stomach is cut, removed stappled, most of the part of the stomach that is removed contains the appetite increasing hormone grehlin, the removal of this area is thought to keep appetite post surgery at bay.....
not many places do either of these surgeries but for opposite reasons
VSG because it is "new" not really has been around for >10 years as it is part one of DS
VBG because the band has replaced it
Sleeve gastrectomy

Topic: RE: Hair Loss Concerns
from what i have read on the boards the loose stool thing does go away, sometimes the other extreme constipation happens often.some use miralax etc,but as different foods are brought back into the diet each person has to find what works for them.

Topic: RE: Pain Medication
Your primary care physician will take care of you, they take a oath to do so. I know two people who have had surgery in Mexico and they were taken care of well back home by their own doctor.
You will not be flying all looped out on meds, they are not fond of doing that I hear, but by the time you fly home, you will be doing well for the flight. I would make a apt with your own doctor the day after you get home depending upon the flight, or go to emergency, they will give you something. Be sure to let them know what surgery you have had and where.
No one is going to fault you for saving money.
Yea for you for going to look great in your 60's!!
I will be having surgery soon here in my own area! Keep in touch! I am 57, so I am right behind you!
I do know that many doctors at least here at Kaiser give liquid pain meds... I will be going home with liquid codine or vicodin or what ever my surgeon feels necessary.
Please be sure and get your doctor when you come back from surgery to get you set up for your bariattric follow up apts for your first year.

Topic: RE: Thinking about the VBG Surgery
I can only add that a friend of mine had the VBG and has many problems, and has regained a lot of weight. The VBG was done 10 years ago. I don't think it's done much anymore. I chose the VSG because it's permanent and seems to have good results.

i am two years out today and dr valin was wonderful, i had the vbg but i dont know if it was the new and improved one, and yes everytime i came on here before my surgery everything was negative and i thought for sure i would fail, but i am down to 168 after being at 242 and i have nothing but wonderful things to say about it. they say that he is one of the best something was said to me the morning of my surgery that i will never forget because i made the anthestegioligist repeat it to me "you are dr valins patients i just want to tell you that i am honored to be working with you and dr valin he is the best in southern new england and rest assured you are in good hands" that calmed me so much you have no idea.. good luck wish i saw this sooner

I have decided to have Dr Chua do VBG,also. Is there anything that I need to know about this type of surgery vs RNY? I sometimes get anemia, so I was very concerned about the RNY and getting malabsorbtion problems. Like you I noticed the percentage was very small between the two surgeries.
