Believe it or not, it doesn't seem to matter where you are in this journey, we seem struggle with developing a positive self image. I knew that I could be harsh with myself when I was large, but I was surprised that I seem to be harder on myself the smaller I got. I was more focused on the imperfections. As a matter of a fact, as we get smaller, it's not unusual for us to be MORE critical of our bodies, rather than more accepting. I think that for me, this is in part because I realize that I have 'done it to myself' when I see the extra skin. That said, I think it's important to not only appreciate the health aspects of our metamorphosis, but to also appreciate the positive changes in our physiques. So I'd like you to tell me at least one thing, and hopefully more, that you LIKE about your body now, no matter where you are in your journey. This is not about bragging. This is about really trying to see the positive in where you are. To be honest, it was harder for me than I thought it would be, but it's something I'm going to try to practice to see if it will help me become more comfortable with who I am now and what I look like.
There are plenty of things that I like about how my body works, but these are the things about how my body looks. I like my
- slender frame
- the shape of my face... It's oval and I always thought is was round
- my feminine shape
- the length of my neck... I never realized I had a neck before!
- collar bones
- waist

I am having a revision to RNY on 9/1 and hope to use this as a behavioral modification as I will hopefully have some intolerance to things that I like now so I won't like them anymore. I didn't have support when I had my VBG and do attend a support group now and plan on doing things very differently.
I wish you luck in whatever you decide to do.

I had the "new improved" VBG done in April 2009, Dr. Valin was my surgeon also. I did a lot of research because every time I looked up VBG the information was really negative. After talking with Debbie, my husband, then Dr. Valin, I decided the VBG was what I wanted. I did not want the maintenance of the lap band and the nutritional deficits related to the bypass so this was what I decided would work for me. I have done great but I was determined to follow the guidelines. It hasn't always been easy but I wanted this more than anything so I worked hard at eating the right things, exercising 4 or 5 times a week etc. I have gone from 265 lbs to 160 lbs, most of which I lost in the first nine months. I have been maintaining since the beginning of the year. I would like to loose another 10 lbs but that is up to me. I need to get back to the plan of eating high protein, low carb and I have not been doing that as well as I should. I tend to calorie count more than carb count so I am sure that is why I am staying in the 160 range. Even this is a blessing to me. I never thought I would see this weight again. If I had to do it over again I would not hesitate, it saved my life.
If you want to talk just let me know. Good luck to you!
