Acid Reflux? Did you have it before and did you get it after?

The only time I have had reflux is right before my band came off and was way too tight.  Otherwise I have never had a problem and I really dont want one!  That was terrible and I could not sleep.  Does the surgery cause it?

I had it before surgery and after surgery it just went away. I do not suffer any more from it.
My surgeon gave me the tool. Now it is up to me to use it right.

I actually did some research on this. I had acid reflux before the Band which caused nausea in the mornings and occasional vomiting. The Band relieved these symptoms. After the sleeve, the reflux got incredibly worse. I wake up at night with acid in my mouth, and for a while I thought the nausea was due to eating but realized it was due to the reflux. It is now more manageable, but still there 6 months out.

The research I read says that the surgery can cause increased reflux in patients after surgery, but that in most patients it resolves between 6-12 months out. I am hopeful I am part of that majority.

My surgeon also said that he puts all patients on a PPI for six months after surgery to help the stomach heal, so many people are on meds without many symptoms.

If it makes you feel better, I have not heard from many on this site that have reflux as bad as I do, so the odds of getting it bad are low. But it is important to go into this understanding that reflux could get worse. I hope that helps.

I didn't have reflux prior to surgery, but had it after. Am now on a PPI and it seems to have helped it a great deal.

I had GERD before surgery, and it's worse now.  I went through three PPIs after surgery.  Nexium, which Aceves recommends, didn't do anything for me, so I went back to my pre-surgery standby Prilosec OTC, which also didn't work for some reason.  Moved to Prevacid OTC, which worked great for several months, then recently the acid started breaking thru, so my PCP put me on Dexilant.  I've only been taking it for 2 days, so it remains to be seen whether it works but seems to be...

I do stay away from things that can rile up the Snarly Monster - tomato-based sauces, highly fatty foods, wine. Pre-surgery, baked goods also triggered GERD episodes, but I don't eat that stuff anymore anyway.  I also avoid eating for 3 hours before bedtime.  I feel it's manageable, but the previous poster is right, we should go into this knowing what MIGHT happen.  I did read about this pre-surgery and went ahead anyway, and don't regret my decision.

My physician also put me on Dexilant for a few months, but because it worked the same as the Nexium, I switched back due to insurance. I do think now though that Dexilant worked a bit better. Good luck with it.

Thank you for the replies.  Hopefully I wont get it but I know it is a possibility!  I already have a prescription for prevacid.  If that doesn't work I will round up some samples of Nexium at work.  Just praying it doesn't get bad!!!

My surgeon advised me that what he generally sees is people with NO reflux prior to surgery may have a mild case of reflux post-op, but people with GERD or severe reflux tend to get a lot worse post-op.

I have a slipped band now that is causing acid problems. I wake up at night choking on acid and nothing seems to help.  Things were perfect until I got a slipped band. My doctor is telling me that the band is tight enough that the acid is building up pressure and shooting up when I go to sleep.

I'm sure getting rid of the band will fix this issue. I just hope that the sleeve doesn't bring on a new one.
