My NSV from yesterday backfired!! Plz give advice! ( Long rant)
So, yesterday I posted that FINALLY I had someone notice that I had lost weight, and I was very happy that my hard work was starting to show.
Well, today, ( I work for the school system ) TWO different co-workers came to me and told me that my supervisor is telling people that he thinks I am doing drugs to lose weight!!! I take that as a very serious allegation! I live in a small community, and it could be all around town in no time that I am doing drugs! I consider that defamation of character! He is supposed to be a "professional", but he is always talking about other people like this. Just the other day, he told ME that so-and-so's marriage was falling apart, and that she isn't being herself because her husband is sleeping around on her, etc. That is not something that my BOSS should be telling me!! Every year before the beginning of school, we have this meeting, and he goes on a rant for 30 minutes about "confidentiality" and then he goes around and does this!
I confronted him about my "drug use" this morning, and he started screaming at me! He said that already 5 people this school year have said that they have heard something from someone else that he said! ( It is only the 8th day of school!!!) He told me, that if he thought I was doing drugs, he would have already had me tested. I told him I would take a test right then. He said, " I am telling you to your face that I have never said that!" I trust the two people who told me that, and know how he is, so I am positive he said that!
I have never done a drug in my life, and take this very seriously! I feel like going to the superintendent about this, but I know if I did, my relationship with my boss would be tarnished for good.
What should I do? Am I making too much out of this? I thought about electing to go have a drug test, and tell him to either tell everyone that I passed the test, or that I would go to the super.
Give me some advice, please!! This happened two hours ago, and I am still shaking with fury!!
So much for my great NSV!!
Sheri
sorry so long!
That's horrible, but you are kind of in a tough spot - chose to go up and **** of the boss or just deal with it. Either way, I think you did the right thing about confronting him. I don't think you need to go take a test - screw them. You have nothing to prove to them.

I have chosen not to tell co-workers about my surgery at this point. Again, it is the rumor mill, and that is something that is personal and private to me.
I just don't want it getting around to my kids' parents that, " Mrs. Sheri's doing drugs!" If it weren't such a small community, I probably wouldn't be so upset, but in this town, you know what color underwear people are wearing that day, due to the gossip mill!!!
LOL I would absolutely go to the Superintendant. If he is continued to be allowed to spread rumors about you and your other co-worker, who's next? You may be helping not only yourself, but your other co-workers from this guy. He needs to learn that he is in a PROFESSIONAL environment, and that type of high school behavior is not allowed or professional.
Best of luck to you! Keep us updated!!
Hold your head up high. If your not telling people about your surgery ( i dont at work)
Just talk about yourself how your changing how you eat and portions, How you are walking
and talk about your activity etc.....
Something tells me to do nothing. Just by you already having a conversation may
have taken care of the situation. ( dont know) but at least it took care of your feelings
is what is important.
I am soooo sorry your getting this negative attention. If it contines, then you will have to
take action. Hope this passes soon. Hope That jerk backs off now that he knows you
know.

If you are not in a school union, then going to the superintendant might be the right thing to do. You already have a shaky relationship with your boss (at least from your end) and if there are rumors about you doing drugs, regardless of who's spreading them, it might be best to address them before it gets back to the superintendant through the rumor mill route. You could even tell the superintendant that you're considering pursuing a legal course for the defamation of character since it is potentially harming your employment and livelihood. This is a serious issue and needs to be taken seriously, and it's very clear that your boss isn't a serious kind of person. I'd totally go up the chain on this one.
At this point, your super might opt to give you a drug test to clarify things, and then have a meeting with your principal and the rest of the staff on professionalism in the workplace. And I'd hope that she'd reprimand your boss for spreading all kinds of gossip in the past as well.
Good luck and let us know what happens!
There are many reasons people lose weight, and surgery is just one of them.
Would you tell them if you had an STD and the antibiotics used to treat it caused you to lose weight? Most likely not.
Would you tell them if you had cancer and the radiation and chemo were causing you to lose weight? Possibly, but also not any of their business.
Your health and how you manage it is NOT a workplace concern, especially if you didn't take off any time during the school year to have the surgery/recover.
It is 100% not something you need to disclose, and that is a legal fact.
