All post-op patients are usually sent home on a PPI.  You don't have enough of your stomach left to combat the extra acid production.  I increased my PPI shortly after my surgery due to constantly experiencing what I thought was hunger - it ended up being increased stomach acid that was making me feel hungry.

Thanks for answering.  So you only take them when you need them, or all of the time?

I take them everyday.  If I forget to take it in the morning, my tummy is sure to remind me in the evening!  Also, they work best on an empty stomach.

 What She said.

Plus after coming off of mine at 3 months post op, I started again at 6 months.  I was having bouts of acid that were causing me to "feel" hungry and heart burn in either the dentist chair or lying in bed at night.  I just took the over the counter omeprazole with my surgeons approval.  Its done just fine for me.

Thank you for answering.  Do you take them every day? Or, as needed??

PPIs are not really as needed types of drugs.  If you need instant acid releif you need tums or something similar.  PPIs can take several days to build up to an effective dose.

I take 1 per day with my vitamins in the morning.

I forgot to take mine yesterday and had some Texas Cavier and man..it told me off and soooo many ways!! I have to take mine (Prilosec) everyday w/o fail! Talk to you doctor if you're not taking anything right now and you're having tummy problems when you eat.

Welcome to the club!
